Hello everyone,

How are you doing? It’s just over a week until the speech contest and we’re busy making final preparations. I look forward to seeing everyone on the big day. I got a haircut earlier this week. A few students commented about this. A frequent mistake in English is to say, ‘Oh! Did you cut your hair?’ when you mean ‘Did you get your hair cut?’. The first means you cut your hair yourself (i.e. not the barber or hairdresser). I was asked ‘Did you cut your hair?’ a couple of times this week.

On Sunday, Alan and I went to Pacific Language School in Tokyo to attend a conference about the revisions to the PLS system, especially the rank system. It meant getting up at 5am and getting back at 9pm. Inbetween, there was a jam-packed meeting involving detailed explanations of the new system and demonstrations of 28 games and teaching activities, most of them new to me. It was a lot to take in but we both made lots of notes. I look forward to gradually introducing these new activities of the next few months and transitioning to the new rank system in the new year. It’s good that the system keeps evolving and improving and I hope the students and parents find them a positive improvement on an already excellent system.

お元気ですか？スピーチコンテストまであと1週間程となりました。私達は最終準備に大忙しです。当日、皆さんにお会いできるのを楽しみにしています。

さて今週始めに、私は髪を切りました。何人かの生徒さんがその事についてコメントしてくれましたが、「髪を切る」という事を英語で言う時のよくある間違いがあります。”Did you cut your hair?” は「自分で自分自身の髪を切る」という意味になります。なので床屋や美容院で「髪を切ってもらったの？」と聞く時は、”Did you get your hair cut?”などとなります。

日曜日には、アランと私はPLSシステムの改正についての説明を聞きに東京にあるPLS本部のPassific Language School へ行ってきました。今回のミーティングでは、28個ものゲームやアクティビティのデモンストレーションを見学したり、新しいランクシステムについての細かな説明を聞いてきましたが、すべての事が私にとって新しい事でした。かなり多くの事がありましたが、2人でたくさんメモを取ってきました。これらのアクティビティを徐々にクラスで紹介し、そして来年の新しいシステムへの移行を楽しみにしています。ＰＬＳシステムは改良と進化を続けているのはいい事だと思います。既に素晴らしいシステムだと思いますが、生徒や保護者の方々に、さらに良くなったところを見て頂けたらと思います。
