Mother’s Day in the UK

Last Sunday was Mother’s Day in the UK, that technically is a different holiday to the one celebrated in Japan, the US and many other countries. While both the UK and international holidays both are celebrated in the same way today, with cards, chocolates, flowers and being nice to your mother.

先週の日曜日はイギリスでは母の日でした🌸

日本やアメリカ、その他の多くの国とは違う日になるのですが、

どこの国もチョコレートやお花にカードを添えて渡し、お母様たちに優しくする日です。

タイミングは違っても、お祝いの方法とお母様への暖かい心は世界共通みたいですね

But the history of the UK holiday, otherwise known as “Mothering Sunday” dates back to the Middle Ages, when children who had entered into domestic service were allowed to return home to their families and Mothers on that day.

イギリスの祝日の一つに、”マザリングサンデイ”というものがあります。

昔、奉公人として働いていた子供達が実家に帰省する日でした

So originally the “Mothering” aspect of the day wasn’t really about celebrating mothers. But over time it became a tradition for children to pick flowers on their journey home and present them as a gift to their mothers.

とうこともあり、母の日はもともとお母さんを祝う日ではありませんでした。

しかし、時が経つにつれて子供達がお花を選んでお母さんに渡すという習慣になっていったんですね。

What we celebrate today has more to do with the American holiday in May, that was created in the early 20^th Century by Anna Jarvis as a memorial of her own mother who was a peace activist and treated injured soldiers in the American Civil War. This gained traction and was declared a national holiday in 1914.

現在私たちが行っている母の日というものは、20世紀初めにアメリカで制定され5月の祝日と関係があります。

Anna Jarvisという女性が、当時の南北戦争で負傷した兵士を治療していた、社会活動家である実の母の事を思って

設立された祝日だったんです
