What’s the most popular sport in your country?

Hello everyone,

This past week I’ve been asking all of my students the same question.

“Did you watch the baseball?” The answer was a resounding yes from almost everyone. In case you didn’t already know, Japan won the world baseball classic last Wednesday. Congratulations to the team, who beat the favorites, U.S.A. in the final. The tournament had good timing for Japanese students to watch. Many of the matches happened in the morning during the spring vacation. The students had time off school to watch Japan upset both Mexico and the U.S.A. Baseball is the most popular spectator sport in Japan. It was first introduced here in the 1870s and the Japanese professional league started in the 1920s. A writer explained why it grew into the country’s most popular sport. He said baseball held “the Japanese view of life, stressing group identity, cooperation, hard work, and respect for age”. I have been to two games in Yokohama since I came to Japan, and while I wasn’t a fan of the sport, I enjoyed the atmosphere and excitement of the match. In Ireland, baseball doesn’t really exist at all. It would be very difficult to even find a baseball club. The most popular sports are soccer, rugby, tennis, basketball, gaelic football and hurling. If you’re wondering what those last two sports are, it’s because they are only played in Ireland. Gaelic football and hurling have some similarities. They are played on a field like a rugby pitch. There is a goal the size of a soccer goal and if you score in there, you get 3 points. If you hit the ball over the bar, like in rugby, you get one point. The 3 points goal is more difficult because there is a goalkeeper. In gaelic football the ball is just like a soccer ball. You can pick it up and run with it, but tackles can be heavy, so it’s difficult to keep. In hurling the ball is smaller and you hold a stick to hit it, like in hockey. They are fast, exciting sports so have a look for some matches online. Every country has its own native sport, and it’s interesting to learn about them.
