How many Emperors have there been?

February has been much colder than January so far! I hope it warms up a little soon, it’s time for the seasons to change. Today is a national holiday here in Japan, National Foundation Day or “Kenkoku Kinen no Hi”. This national holiday was established in 1966 as a day to reflect on the establishment of the nation and to nurture a love for the country. From 1872 to 1948, February 11 was known as Kigen-setsu, a holiday commemorating the day on which—according to the Nihon Shoki— the legendary Emperor Jimmu is said to have acceded the throne in 660 BCE. Emperor Jimmu is said to be the first emperor of Japan, but we are not sure if he even existed. In fact, the first 25 emperors are all listed as “presumed legendary”, because they are listed from records written many years later. It’s amazing that Japan has had emperors from 660BC until now, with emperor Naruhito being the 126th in line. Like many monarchies around the world, they used to have power, but once the country became a democracy, they became public figures only. When Ireland gained independence from the UK in 1922, the king or queen were no longer the heads of state. So, Ireland has a democratically elected “president” every four years. Ireland’s president doesn’t hold any political power, like the prime minister, but acts as a public figure for Ireland, similar to how a king or emperor does in other countries. Ireland’s current president, Michael D. Higgins is 82 years old! It reminds me of the current contenders for the next president of the U.S.A. It looks like Donald Trump might be up against Joe Biden again this year. However, people are worried about how old both of them are. The youth of the nation need someone they can relate to. Do you think there should be age limits for politicians?

By the way, if you are a girl here in Japan, don’t forget to get some chocolate for the boys on Wednesday. Valentine’s Day is just around the corner! Don’t worry about giving all that chocolate away because the boys will have to repay the favor on “White Day” next month.

昨日は、「建国記念の日」でした。建国を振り返り、国を愛する心を育む日として1966年に制定された国民の祝日です。 1872 年から 1948 年まで、2 月 11 日は紀元節として知られ、日本書紀によれば、神武天皇が紀元前 660 年に即位したとされる日を記念する祝日でした。神武天皇は日本の初代天皇と言われていますが、実在したのかどうかは定かではありません。実際、最初の 25 人の皇帝はすべて「推定伝説的」としてリストされています。日本には紀元前660年から現在に至るまで天皇が存在し、徳仁天皇は第126代であることは驚くべきことです。
