Have you heard of “Blue Monday”?

It’s still very cold here as we come to the end of January. Luckily for us, Shizuoka has some of the mildest winter weather in Japan. Many of the Northern prefectures had a lot of snow recently. I only saw snow fall twice in my entire time in Japan. Once this year, and another time about five years ago. In Ireland, snow falls about once or twice a year, but it rarely stays on the ground. I remember a few occasions where we had about 20cm of snow, and other years when there was none. There are no snow-plough trucks or salt gritters in Ireland, so if it snows people can’t drive anywhere! I remember in 2010, there was a big freeze, and there was a lot of snow and ice on the roads of Dublin for about 1 week. Many people didn’t go to work. I walked to work at the time, but the footpath was like an ice-rink, so I slipped and fell on my journey. I much prefer the winter here in Japan. Whereas Japan has bright and sunny weather, in Ireland it’s a little colder, dark and cloudy. That’s a mood changer. When It’s gets bright at 9AM and dark at 3:30PM, you can start to feel blue. That’s way the third Monday of January is called “Blue Monday”. Christmas and the New Year holidays are over, and it’s still cold and dark. So that Monday is described as the most depressing day of the year. But don’t be sad, spring is on the way! I’m looking forward to my favorite season. Warm weather, cherry blossoms, my birthday. That’s why I like spring so much. Enjoy the rest of the winter everyone!

みなさん、こんにちは。アランです。

１月も後半になり寒さが続いていますね。しかし静岡は、他の地域に比べると穏やかです。東北地方は大雪です私は日本にいる間に雪がふっているのを２回しか見たことがありません。今年と、５年前です。アイルランドでは、雪は１年に数回降るぐらいですが、雪は積もるほど降るのは珍しいです。ある時は、２０センチも積もったり、ある時は雪が全く降らなかったり。アイルランドには除雪車がないので、雪が降ると人々はどこにも運転できなくなります。私が覚えているのは、今から１０年ほど前に、私の住むダブリンに一週間ほど大雪がふり道路が凍結したことです。人々は仕事にいけず、私は歩いて仕事場まで行きました。しかし歩道がアイススケート場のようになっていて、滑って転びました。日本の冬の方が断然いいですね。日本は明るく晴れていますが、アイルランドは少し寒く、暗く、そして曇っています。午前9時に明るくなり、午後3時30分に暗くなると、気分がブルーになります。そこから、1月の第3月曜日は「ブルーマンデー」と呼ばれるようになりました。クリスマスと年末年始は終わり、まだ寒くて暗いです。そのため、月曜日は1年で最も憂鬱な日とされています。しかし、悲しむことはありません。春が近づいています！私の好きな季節です。暖かい天気、桜、私の誕生日。だから春が大好きです。
