Happy Saint Patrick’s Day

Hello everyone,

Happy Saint Paddy’s Day! Paddy is the common nickname for Patrick in Ireland. So now it’s more common for people to say Paddy’s Day. In the U.S.A., however, that nickname somehow got changed to “Patty’s Day”. In Ireland, we don’t like that name, we would prefer if stayed Paddy’s Day. But it seems to have caught on in the U.S., so we’ll just have to deal with it. There is an old saying, “Tom-ay-to, tom-ah-to”. It means that Americans and Europeans pronounce the word tomato differently. There are many other differences in English on both sides of the Atlantic. For example, how we spell “color” or “colour”.

Today, all over the world, people would be holding big street parades in every major city. Of course, they are all cancelled this year, just like last year. I remember going to the Dublin parades since I was a child, seeing a sea of green, with marching bands, Irish dancing, and giant floats driving along the street. When I got older, the parade was followed by everyone packing in the all of the bars in Dublin and drinking Guinness. It’s a national holiday and everyone is in a great mood.

So why do we wear green? And who is Saint Patrick? He’s the man responsible for bring Christianity to Ireland, a whopping 1,600 years ago! He used a shamrock (a type of clover) to teach the symbolism of religion. And so the shamrock became the symbol of his day. Also, the Irish national color is green, so it became lucky to wear it on this day. Thanks to all of our students who came in wearing green this week. You make me so happy, it feels like I’m back in Ireland. Have a great week!

ハッピーセイントパトリックスデイ！　最近では、この日はアメリカではPaddy’s Dayと呼ばれています。

アイルランドでは、Paddy’s Dayという呼び名は好まれていませんが。

この日は世界中でパレードが開かれていますが、今年は全てがキャンセルされました。子供の頃、ダブリンのパレードに行ったのを覚えています。緑で埋め尽くされた大勢の人たち、マーチングバンド、アイリッシュダンス、巨大な山車が通りを走っていました。大人になり、パレードが終わると、ダブリンのバーに行き、ギネスを飲を飲むのが習慣的です。この日は国民の祝日で、皆、エネルギッシュになる日です。
では、なぜ私たちは緑を着るのでしょうそして、聖パトリックは誰でしょう。彼はなんと1600年前にアイルランドにキリスト教をもたらすきっかけとなった人物です。彼はシャムロック（クローバーの一種）を使用して、宗教の象徴性を教えました。そして、シャムロックは時代の象徴となりました。また、アイルランドのナショナルカラーは緑なので、この日に緑のものを身に着けると幸運をもたらします。
