This last Sunday was Easter in the UK, a holiday that today is celebrated as a Christian holiday but originally comes from the pagan celebration of the Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring, Eostre. And later adopted by Christians.

先週の日曜日はイギリスでは、イースターの日でした

キリスト教のお祝いの日として親しまれているこの日ですが、アングロサクソンの神である、「エオストレ」という女神がその起源だとされているんですよ

One of the main traditions these days is the giving of hollow egg-shaped chocolate. This can be traced back to the early 1800s when artificial eggs were made and given as gifts at easter throughout Europe and solid chocolate eggs became fashionable in France and Germany.

イースターと言えば、卵型のチョコレートを配るという文化が有名ですよね

この文化は1800年代に手作り卵をイースターのプレゼントとして、ヨーロッパ中に配ったことから始まり、

そこからチョコレートの卵がフランスやドイツで人気になったといいます

In 1873 hollow Easter eggs were created that more closely resemble the eggs we know today. They were created by a chocolate firm in Bristol, UK that would later merge with Cadburys and launched their own easter egg in 1875.

1873年に中が空洞のイースターエッグが作られました。

Also, many shops will sell Hot cross buns which are also eaten to celebrate Easter. They could date back to 6^th Century Greece. They are sweet, spiced bread rolls commonly contain raisins and are marked with a cross. But these days they can be found to contain chocolate or even blueberries. Most people eat them toasted with butter.
