As we reach mid-October and with Halloween fast approaching. I start to feel the excitement of Halloween, seeing all the decorations and costumes in the shops. The fun of working out what to wear and telling spooky stories of ghosts, witches, and vampires. But the festival we celebrate is mainly derived here from the Americanization of the holiday and the popular traditions that come from it. While Halloween has its origin in the British Isles, it has always been somewhat overshadowed in the UK by another festival on November 5^th of Guy Fawkes Night (more on this in a future blog post!).

 

In the UK only in recent years has the festival taken more of a hold culturally and we still don’t celebrate it as passionately as the US.  We do trick or treat but again most years we would only get maybe 4 or 5 trick or treaters on the night. Unlike in the US where I witnessed the area I lived in when was in the US full of children and young adults in costumes, houses decorated, and many events taking place.

 

 

One big difference is in the UK if you do wear a costume it most likely be some kind of scary monster or horrifying creature, unlike in the US where costumes aren’t necessarily frightening many will dress just as superheroes or their favorite characters. Most in the UK still lean towards the idea of Halloween being a darker spooky holiday.

 

 

10月半ばに近づくと一気にハロウィンムードになってきますね。

お店にハロウィンのコスチュームや装飾アイテムが並んでいるのを見ると、

とてもわくわく楽しみな気持ちになってきます。👻🎃

 

当日何を着ていこうか考えたり、おばけや魔女、吸血鬼にまつわるこわ～い話をどうやってしようか

なんて考えるだけで楽しくなるんです。

 

ところが悲しいことに、私たちがハロウィンと認識しているイベントは、

主にアメリカで主に行われている、少し本来の意味とは異なったものであるのを知っていましたか？

 

本当はイギリスのケルト文化にその起源があるのですが、

他の文化の影響で少しずつ本来の意味や習わしが薄れてきてしまっているように思います。

 

イギリスでは、本来の文化的な意味を尊重してハロウィンが行われています。

（アメリカのように盛大に賑やかには祝わないんですね。）

 

もちろん「トリックオアトリート」の文化はそのままありますが、

たいていは4~5人の子供たちがお菓子をもらいに来る程度です。

 

一方、アメリカのハロウィンのイメージとしては、町中で大勢の子供たちがスーパーヒーローのコスチュームを着て、

家もたくさん装飾をして、ハロウィンにちなんだイベントなんかもたくさん催されていて楽しい雰囲気ですよね

 

そして何よりもイギリスとアメリカのハロウィン文化で一つ決定的に違うのは、

「コスチューム」です。

 

イギリスのコスチュームはこわ～いモンスターや気持ち悪い怖い生き物の服を着ますが、

アメリカではどうでしょう。

 

そんなことはおかまいなしに、子供たちが着たい服を着て過ごします。

イギリスではほとんどの場合、伝統的な意味合いを大切にしているので本来の意味である、怖い服装をします。
