Last weekend I went to Yokosuka 

There was a Pokemon go event happening at the time, and there are some other interesting things to see there 

For example, I’d never seen a submarine in person before going there 

 

I had lunch and met up with an acquaintance.

When I called him to ask about how to find his shop, I noticed that someone nearby had a confused look on their face 

 

I realized that even though that person could understand some English, they hadn’t heard a certain phrase before: “gotcha” 

 

Sometimes, when we’re confirming understanding of something another person said, we’ll say “gotcha”, which comes from “I got you.” This means something like “I understand.” 

 

But be careful

It’s also used when you shock someone or play a joke on someone. For example, some children might tell their classmates “There’s something on your shirt” and then flick the classmate’s note when they look down and say “gotcha!” 

 

みなさんこんにちは。

先週わたしは横須賀へ行きました。

その日そこでポケモンGOのイベントがありました。そして他にも見るべき面白いものがありました。

たとえばわたしは横須賀へ行くまで直に潜水艦を見たことがありませんでした。

 

昼食を食べ、知人と会いました。彼に、どこに彼の店があるのかたずねようと電話をしたとき、近くにいた人が困惑した顔をしていたことに気が付きました。

 

英語が理解できる人でさえ、「gotcha」に相当することばを聞いた事が無いということを知りました。

 

他の人が言ったことを理解したことを確かめるときに、「gotcha」といいます。これは「I got you.(わかりました)」からきています。

これは「I understand」のような意味です。

 

ですが気を付けて下さい。これはだれかを驚かせたり、冗談を言う時にも使いますよ。
