Hello and welcome back to my weekly blog which is quickly becoming a tour of the British Isles’ culinary delights!

 

So this week I’m going to look at a classic British meal, Fish and chips.

Fish and chips are a popular hot dish of deep-fried fish in a crispy batter, served with chips which are thick-cut fried potatoes.

 

 

It is commonly a takeaway meal and the best way to buy fish and chips is at a Chip shop. Chip shops or “chippes” can be found in every city, town, and almost every village in the UK. There are around 8500 fish and chip shops across the UK, that’s eight for every one McDonald’s in the country. The small town I lived in the UK, before moving back to Japan had 5 dotted in various locations.

 

The food has its roots (like Tempura) in Portugal, as it was Spanish/Portuguese immigrants that first brought fried fish to the UK in the early 16^th century. The first chip shop is reported to have been opened around the 1860s in London, though fish and chips as a meal had existed 50 years prior.

 

There has been a long tradition of it being a staple meal of the working classes, though these days it is enjoyed by almost everyone in the UK. Classically it would be wrapped and given to the customer in old newspapers, which begat the saying “Today’s news is tomorrows fish and chips paper” but these days this has been replaced by white oil-proof paper as the print of the unhygienic used newspaper had a tendency to rub off on the food.

 

How you eat your fish and chips is down to personal preference some like to eat them with curry sauce others with gravy and mushy peas. But the most common way we like to eat is with a sprinkling of salt and a coating of vinegar.

今週はイギリスの定番料理、フィッシュ アンド チップスのことを書いていこうと思います。

フィッシュ アンド チップスは、カリカリに揚げた魚と厚切りのフライド ポテトが添えられた英国の人気料理です。

通常は持ち帰り用で購入されますが、一番のおすすめはチップ ショップです。

チップショップまたは「チップス」は、英国のすべての都市、町、およびほぼすべての村にあります。

英国には約 8,500 のフィッシュ アンド チップス ショップがあり、これは国内のマクドナルドの店舗数の８倍に相当します。

私が日本に戻る前に住んでいたイギリスの小さな町にも、５店舗ありました。

 

この料理のルーツはポルトガルにあります。16 世紀初頭に魚のフライを最初に英国に持ち込んだのはスペイン/ポルトガルの移民でした。最初のチップス ショップは 1860 年代頃にロンドンにオープンしたと言われていますが、食事としてのフィッシュ アンド チップスは その50 年前に存在していました。

 

労働者階級の主食であるという長い伝統がありまあすが、現在では英国のすべての人が楽しんでいます。昔は「今日の新聞は明日のフィッシュアンドチップスの紙」という言葉が使われるように、古新聞紙に包んで店で渡されていましたが、今は白い耐油紙なりました。フィッシュ アンド チップスの食べ方は個人の好みによりますが、カレー ソースと一緒に食べる人もいれば、グレイビー エンドウ豆と一緒に食べる人もいます。 しかし、私たちが好む最も一般的な食べ方は、塩と酢をまぶしたものです。
