Hello everyone,

It’s a wet and windy day. A large typhoon is passing over west Japan at the moment and, although it’s far away, the tail end of it is bringing lots of heavy showers to Fuji. Many schools in the area are closed today because of this, including my daughter’s kindergarten. I don’t think the weather is bad enough to close schools today. It would be just a regular day in Ireland. Any time I return to Ireland for a holiday I’m reminded what a windy country it is. Japan has calmer wind in comparison. Whenever a storm passes through Ireland it is given a name beginning with a letter of the alphabet (e.g. A – Alan). The next storm then has a new name beginning with the next letter of the alphabet (e.g. B – Brian). When there is a large storm or typhoon coming, people say “batten down the hatches!” This is an old phrase that comes from sailors who travelled by ship. They would close hatches on the ship to prevent water getting below-decks in a storm. The things they used to close the hatches were called battens. Now we use this phrase to warn people to take care in the bad weather. It can also be used as an idiom to prepare for trouble in the future in any situation. I hope the typhoon doesn’t cause much trouble in west Japan today. People have been taking precautions and have evacuated in some areas. Typhoon “Jebi” is the strongest to make landfall in Japan in 25 years. So batten down the hatches and stay safe.

Today is Yui’s birthday! We celebrated with delicious cake, gifts and cards. The cake had a cool basketball decoration, which is her hobby. Happy birthday Yui!

今日は濡れて風も強い日ですね。大きな台風が西日本を通過しているところで、遠いにもかかわらず、

台風の尾が富士にも激しい雨をもたらしています。

台風の影響でこのあたりの多くの学校が今日はお休みです。私の娘の幼稚園もです

私には学校を休みにするほどひどい天気には思えません。

アイルランドでは普通の日です休暇でアイルランドへ戻るといつもなんて風の強い国だと思い知らされます

それに比べて日本はより風が穏やかです

アイルランドでは嵐が通過するときいつもアルファベットの文字で始まる名前をつけます(例：A-アラン)そうすると次の嵐はその次のアルファベットから始まる名前をもらいます。(例：B-ブライアン)

大きな嵐や台風が来るとき人びとは「batten down the hatches(船のハッチをしめろ)！」と言います。

これは古い言い回しで船で旅した航海士に由来します彼らは嵐の中で甲板の下に水が入るのを防ぐために船の船室を閉めます。

船室をしめることをbattensといいます。今は私達はこの言い回しを人々に悪天候に備えるよう警告する為に使います。

またあらゆるシチュエーションにおける未来に起こるトラブルに備えるためにも使われます。

今日台風が西日本であまり問題を起こさないよう祈ります。

地域によっては人々はずっと用心しており、非難をしています。

台風「チェービー」はここ２５年間で地すべりを引き起こすほどの最大勢力です。

なので船室をしめて、安全に過ごしてください。

 

今日はゆいの誕生日です！私達はおいしいケーキ、プレゼントそしてカードでお祝いしました。

ケーキにはかっこいいバスケットボールのデコレーションが施され、バスケは彼女の趣味です。
