This last Thursday was World Book Day which is held on the first Thursday of March in the UK and Ireland. The day is not only to celebrate books but also to promote reading and literacy among children and their parents. One of the biggest indicators of a child’s future success is that they read for pleasure, no matter the child’s background. The day is often celebrated by children going to their school, nursery or local bookstore or library dressed up as their favourite literary characters from Harry Potter to the Gruffalo and taking part in workshops, lessons, and activities that teach them the importance of reading and hopefully spark their enthusiasm and imagination.

イギリスとアイルランドでは、3月最初の木曜日に「世界本の日」という日があります。

その日はただ本を祝うだけではなく、子供や両親が本をもっと読むようにと促進する意味合いもあるイベントです

子供が将来成功するかどうかということは、その子供のこれまでの環境や両親の仕事などに関わらず、

本を楽しみながら読んでいるかということに比例しているとのことです

世界本の日には、学校の子供達や保育園、本屋さんや図書館などで、お気に入りの本のキャラクターのコスチュームを着て、

ワークショップや授業に参加することで本を読むことの大切さを学ぶことができるというものです。

Every child is given a £1 voucher that they can use against a book of their choice, as well as a selection of 10 books for various ages and interests are offered to children for only £1 so effectively, they are free and in doing so giving millions of children access to a book.

子供たちは、£1分の本クーポンを与えられて、それぞれが好きな本を選びます。国が選んだ10冊の推薦図書のようなリストの中から好きな本をクーポンと引き換えでGetできるというなんとも素敵なイベントです✨

World book day in the UK and Ireland first took place in 1997 and over the years has grown to become a large event in many schools’ calendars and now spilling over into many social media posts of some of the creative costumes that parents have created for their children.
