It’s March already! “Spring has sprung”, as they say, which means spring has come. I noticed a change among many of our students since the warm weather came last week. Sniffles and red, itchy eyes. It’s hay fever! The beginning of spring has caused the cedar and cypress trees, which are very common here, to release tons of pollen into the air. This pollen is very irritating for people who suffer from hay fever. I noticed that it is much more common here in Japan than Ireland. People do suffer from it, but it’s a lot less common, and nobody wears masks or special glasses like I have seen in Japan. I think that’s because the cedar trees produce a lot of irritating pollen, also there are so many trees now. Many people started to suffer from hay fever due to cedar pollen from around the 1960’s. During that time, the Japanese government ordered a large number of cedar and cypress trees to be planted to meet demand for wood used in buildings. Since then, other materials are used in buildings, but the trees are still growing and releasing pollen into the air. Before the corona pandemic, I was surprised to see people wearing masks in public in spring. I learned that this was  to protect them from hay fever. Soon, the Japanese government will relax the laws on wearing masks, but I think many people will keep wearing them for this reason. Thankfully, I don’t suffer from bad hay fever, but I can feel in my eyes recently. I have seen how irritating it can be to people. Good luck to all of you hay fever sufferers out there. You have to battle through the spring!

もう3月ですね！

 

先週から暖かい気候へと徐々に変化してくるにつれて、HARIOの生徒達にも変化が訪れていることに気が付きました

目や鼻がむずむずしたり、赤くなったり・・・そう、花粉症がそろそろやってきたんじゃないでしょうか

 

春になると、スギの木が何トンもの花粉を空気中に放出します。

この花粉が人々を困らせるんですよねぇ

 

アイルランドよりも日本の方が花粉に苦しんでいる人が多いように感じます。

もちろんアイルランドでも花粉症はありますが、日本のようにマスクをしたり特別なメガネをしたりするほどではありません。

 

日本では1960年代からスギ花粉に悩まされてきたらしいのですが、

というのもその頃から政府が住宅用にスギの木をたくさん植えたみたいです。

ちょうどその頃から、花粉の放出量も増えたみたいですね。

 

コロナが流行する前に、人々がマスクをつけている光景に驚いていたんですが、

花粉症対策だったんだということに納得しています。

 

もうじき政府は恐らくマスクの緩和をすることと思いますが、まだマスクを外せない人も多いんではないかと思います。

ありがたいことに、私自身はそこまで花粉症に悩まされていないですが、少しずつ目がかゆくなってきています。

苦しんでいる人たちの気持も少し理解できます苦しいですよね。。。
