Why the Long Weekend?

Hello everyone,

It’s mid-July, and I think the rainy season might finally be over. I was asking some of my students what they thought of it this year. Many of them said it was the wettest rainy season they can remember. It’s the same for me. Can you remember a wetter rainy season in your life before this year?

It’s a short week for many people because Thursday and Friday are both national holidays. This year, Ocean Day falls on the 23rd, and Sports Day has been moved from October to this Friday the 24th. Why? It was to coincide with the beginning of the Olympics this week. Sadly, they were postponed, but the new long weekend stayed in place. So enjoy the days off! Remember to eat some sea food on Thursday to be thankful for what the sea has given us. Japan has a lot of seafood in the general diet of daily life. When we think of Japanese food, sushi and sashimi come to mind. I was surprised to see salty seafood snacks are very common here. For example dried squid, salmon jerky, and small dried fish are eaten as “otsumami”, which means salty snacks to have with beer. These are very unusual for Irish people, as in Ireland we only eat cooked fish as a meal. Snacks in Ireland are usually potato chips and nuts. I never thought seafood could be eaten like that!

Friday is Sports Day, which was moved from October because this Friday was going to be the Opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics. The aim was to reduce rush hours for commuters and students, as well as to avoid traffic congestion, so that the athletes could travel to and from venues and security could be maintained without problem. Of course, that’s all moved to next year, and hopefully we’ll see the Olympics then. Enjoy the holiday anyway.
