Why do you have to carry so much?

Hello everyone,

It’s June now and the rainy season is almost upon us. There was some very heavy rain when I was walking my daughter to school this morning. Kids are well prepared for rain now with their umbrellas and waterproof covers on their bags. I’m glad the weather was nice last Wednesday when I was the crosswalk helper or “lollypop man” as they are called in Ireland. It was my turn to go to the crosswalk with my flag and help students to cross the road. I noticed that every student after the first grade wears two bags on their back. Their leather school bag and a backpack. The double bag makes a very large weight on their back. I don’t know how the kids can walk to school with such a large and heavy weight on them. Surely they can leave some things in the school and not bring so much every day. Also, people spend a lot of money on the leather schoolbag or “randoseru”. Yet from the second grade it is covered by the other backpack, so nobody even sees it. Do you think schoolchildren have to carry too much every day?

Here at Hario this week we are going through our students’ speeches, translating and recording them. It’s a long and busy process but it’s well worth it in the end. Our students will have their very own speech to learn next month. Exciting times!

もう６月になり梅雨の季節が始まろうとしています。今朝は非常に激しい雨がふりました。

先週の水曜日は、朝の登校の旗登板でしが、いい天気でよかったです。

その時に、生徒たちが２つのバッグを持っていることに気づきました。ランドセルとリュックサックです。２つのバッグをもって重たそうでした。もちろん持っていくだけで、毎日あの荷物を学校にもっていくわけではないと思いますが。日本ではランドセルにお金をすごくかけますが、リュックサックをしょっていると高価なランドセルはだれも見えません。日本の子供達は、いろんな荷物をもちすぎだと思いませんか。

ハリオでは、スピーチホームワークの準備が進められています。とても長い、忙しい日が続きますが、時間をかけるだけの価値のあるホームワークだと思ってます。来月の中旬には、皆さんに配られることでしょう。お楽しみに。
