What’s the Story?

Hello everyone,

How’s it going? That’s what I asked a student the other day. I was met with a blank face and silence. I explained, that it simply means, “How are you?” “Oh, I’m fine”, replied the now relieved student. That got me thinking about how many different phrases we use to ask people how they are. Different countries all have their own variations too. “What’s up?”, “How’s it hanging?”, “How are you keeping?”. A couple of Irish ones are, “What’s the story?”, and “What’s the craic?” Craic (pronounced crack) is an Irish term which describes a fun or good time when socializing. A foreign friend of mine was confused the first time he heard “What’s the story?” He thought they were asking for the story of his life. There are many idioms that are based around simple greetings and questions. These can be confusing because they often look similar. For example, “How do you do?”, “How are you doing?”, and “What do you do?”, are totally different expressions. It’s a good idea to mix them up and use them as often as we can in daily conversation. That way we can be confident with the first words we often say to each other. This has got me wondering…How many different ways are there of greeting and asking “How are you?” in Japanese?

先日、生徒に「How’s it going?」と尋ねたところ、生徒がぽかんとした表情を浮かべ、沈黙してしまいました。その後、「これは ‘How are you?’ という意味だよ」と説明すると、生徒は安心した様子で「Oh, I’m fine」と答えました。このことから、いろいろなフレーズで「元気ですか？」と尋ねることができるのだと改めて実感しました。

国ごとに異なる表現もあります。「What’s up?」「How’s it hanging?」「How are you keeping?」など。アイルランドでは、「What’s the story?」や「What’s the craic?」という表現があります。「Craic」（クラックと発音します）は、楽しい時間や楽しい社交を表すアイルランドの言葉です。私の外国人の友人は、初めて「What’s the story?」を聞いたとき、人生の物語を尋ねられていると思い、とても混乱していました。

簡単な挨拶や質問に基づいた多くのイディオムがありますが、これらは見た目が似ているため、混乱しがちです。例えば、「How do you do?」「How are you doing?」「What do you do?」は全く異なる表現です。これらを日常会話で使い分けることで、最初の挨拶に自信を持って応えられるようになります。このように考えていると、日本語で「元気ですか？」と尋ねる方法がどれくらいあるのか気になりました。
