What’s the humidity?

Hello everyone,

A word I’ve been teaching a lot this week is “humid”. Students are talking about how it has been uncomfortably hot outside recently. At least it makes a change from all the rain we had before. The humidity has been around 80%, and will rise further as we approach August. Do you think it’s a good idea to have the Olympics at this time of the year? It would be too hot for me to run anywhere! The opening ceremony takes place next week. Ireland have sent their team of 113 athletes to stay in the city of Fukuroi, here in Shizuoka Prefecture. I wonder how they will handle the extreme summer humidity. I have never experienced anything like this weather back in Ireland. So I think they should have trained in a sauna to prepare. I noticed that Fuji city is also hosting some athletes, the Swiss swimming team. There are teams all over our prefecture, due to its convenient distance from Tokyo. The marathon will be held in Sapporo, Hokkaido, which is a good idea. I can’t imagine running 50 km in Tokyo in August! Like last year, the two holidays of Sea Day and Sport’s Day have been moved together to make next Thursday and Friday public holidays. Enjoy the sports!

今週、私がよく生徒達に教えている言葉は”humid”（湿度が高い）です。

生徒達は、最近の湿度が高いゆえの不快感について話をしています。

最近の湿度は約８０％で、８月までさらに上昇します。

皆さんは、こんな時期にオリンピックをやることはいい考えたと思いますか。暑すぎてどこも走れません！

来週、オリンピックの開会式が行われます。アイルランドからは１１３名のアスリートが、ここ静岡の袋井市に滞在します。

私は彼らがどうやってこの湿度に耐えられるのかと思います。アイルランドではこのような気候はありません。なので、彼らは日本に来る準備のためにサウナで特訓すべきです。富士市もスイスの水泳チームのホストになっていますね。日本中のあちこちに世界中のオリンピアン達が滞在します。マラソンは北海道で開催されるのは、いい考えですね。今年も、海の日と体育の日が移動して、来週は４連休になります。みなさん、オリンピック観戦を楽しんでくださいね
