What are your plans for Obon?

Hello everyone,

Obon week is on the way! What are your plans. I’ve been asking all of my students about their plans next week. The answers are a varied mix of staying home and avoiding the extreme heat and going on a trip somewhere, usually to visit relatives. Our students have relatives all over Japan, so I get to learn all about the other prefectures. It’s interesting to find out what the famous food is from each area. Also, if the climate is different there, it becomes a popular destination in August. For example, Nagano has high altitudes and Hokkaido has a cooler summer, so people like to go there to escape the punishing Autumn heat. Is that the reason they call August 11th “Mountain Day”? It’s the hottest time of the year, so you should climb a mountain to cool off! Another popular Obon week activity is visiting the graves of ancestors. Their spirits are coming back at this time of year, so we clean up their grave for their return. It’s the height of summer now, so we are experiencing the incredible humidity that comes with it. Don’t worry, however, Hario has plenty of air-conditioning and fans to keep us cool, so we can focus on English!

もうすぐお盆ですね！皆さんはどんな予定を立てていますか

私は、来週の生徒たちの予定について色々聞いてみましたが、「家で涼しく過ごす」「親戚を訪ねる旅に出る」という答えがほとんどです。生徒たちは日本中に親戚がいるので、他の県について学ぶ良い機会になりますね。各地の名物や気候が異なるエリアが人気になるのも興味深いですね。例えば、長野は高地、北海道は涼しい夏があるため、暑い秋の季節を避けるために訪れる人が多いそうです。8月11日が「山の日」と呼ばれる理由もこれかもしれませんね！一年で最も暑い時期なので、涼むために山を登るというアイデアかも

もう一つのお盆の週の人気活動はお墓参りです。この時期には先祖の霊が戻ってくると言われているので、お墓を綺麗にして迎え入れる習慣があります。今は真夏のピークで、湿度の高さを実感している方も多いと思います。でもご心配なく、ハリオでは十分なエアコンや扇風機を用意して、涼しく過ごしながら英語の勉強に集中できる環境を整えています！
