What are your August Traditions?

Hello everyone,

How are you handling the humidity today? It’s going to go over 90% humidity this evening! It’s August now, so we have a whole month of hot and humid weather to look forward to. For me, August is like a season of its own. We have the chirping of the cicadas, barbeques, obon, fireworks, shaved ice and an inflatable kids pool in the garden. The little pool is supposed to be for kids, but I found it nice and refreshing to sit in on a hot summer day. Another summer tradition we have in Japan is lighting little fireworks in the garden. They are the small stick fireworks we call “sparklers” in Ireland. However, back in Ireland, we only use them on Halloween night. There was a big fireworks display the weekend before last in another big summer tradition: the city festival. Unfortunately, the Fuji festival had been cancelled in previous years, but it came back this year. I was in Obuchi at the time, but I was still able to see the fireworks display in the distance. Fireworks in Ireland always reminded me of Halloween, but here it is the sign of a summer festival. Next week, another big August event will kick off: Obon week. It begins on Thursday next week with Mountain day. There are traditions during the week, such as visiting the family grave at the cemetery. Japanese cemeteries are very different to Irish ones. In Ireland, most people are put in coffins and have a piece of land they are buried in. They are usually buried next to their spouse, but other family members could be buried anywhere else. They aren’t all kept together. In Japan, they have a family grave, where there are sticks with the names of all the family members who have died. So the family has one gravestone that they visit during obon week. What are your plans for the break? Will you brave the heat and go out, or will you stay in and relax?
