Hello everyone,

How about that rain on Wednesday night?! It was an extremely heavy downpour just as we were finishing up here. I saw water pouring out from the drains on the footpath. Thankfully it didn’t last too long and it dried up a lot the next day. We just had another quick and heavy shower as I’m typing this, so I think the rainy season is showing a late appearance before it goes into summer. The first signs of the season moving into summer is not the weather, it’s a sound. Listen closely, if you can hear the chirping of cicadas, you know that summer has arrived. I haven’t heard any yet, but I don’t think it will be long.

School’s out for summer! Summer vacation begins for most students here this weekend. I was talking to my nephews in Ireland on a video call, and I asked them if their summer vacation has started yet. “We’ve been on vacation for over a month now!” was their reply. I forgot just how long the holiday is in Ireland, 9 weeks for Elementary school and up to 13 weeks for secondary school (Junior high and high school). This is because in the past, agriculture was the dominant economic activity and children were needed to help work family farms. I grew up in Dublin, the biggest city in the country. Nobody in my school had a farm! These days, things have changed, of course, and most farms don’t need the help of children, however, the long holidays remain. Our students here in Japan have one month, so I hope they make the most of the break and have fun.

水曜日の夜の雨、すごかったですね！HARIOでの仕事を終えたころ、すごい土砂降りになり、歩道の排水溝から水が溢れているのを見ました。幸いにも雨は長く続かず、翌日にはだいぶ乾いていました。ちょうどこの文章を書いている時にも、短時間で強い雨が降りました。梅雨が終わる前に夏への兆しを見せているのかもしれませんね。季節が夏に移り変わる最初のサインは天気ではなく、音です。耳を澄ませて、蝉の鳴き声が聞こえたら夏の到来を感じることができます。まだ蝉の声は聞いていませんが、もうすぐ聞こえるはずです。

学校は夏休みに突入ですこちらでは今週末から多くの生徒たちの夏休みが始まります。アイルランドに住む甥っ子たちとビデオ通話で話している時に、夏休みはもう始まったかと聞いてみました。彼らの答えは「もう1か月以上前から休みだよ！」でしたアイルランドの休暇がどれほど長いのか忘れていました。小学校は9週間、中学校・高校は最大13週間もあるんです。これは昔、農業が経済活動の中心だったため、子供たちが家族の農場を手伝う必要があったことに由来しています。私はアイルランドの首都ダブリンで育ちましたが、学校の誰も農場を持っていませんでした今では時代が変わり、ほとんどの農場が子供の手を借りる必要はありませんが、長い休暇は今でも続いています。一方で、日本の生徒たちの夏休みは1か月です。休みを最大限楽しんで、素敵な時間を過ごしてほしいと思います。
