When learning English one thing sure to confuse many students is idioms. But did you know that there are some idioms and phrases that are unique to British English? With modern culture and media, many have since “crossed the pond” (to travel across the Atlantic Ocean between the UK and the US). But many still confuse even native speakers. But here are a few classic British idioms to make you “scratch your head” (to confuse you).

1. A penny for your thoughts

This is a way to ask someone to share with you what they are thinking.

Example: “You have been quiet for a while. Penny for your thoughts”.

 

2. I’ll give you a bell

To say that you will call someone by the telephone later.

Example: “We will talk about this later, I could give you a bell about 8 pm?”

 

3. Bagsy

To verbally claim something as yours or to claim the right to be the first to use something. (In American English the idiom “Shotgun” is used instead).

Example: “Bagsy the top bunk!” (of a bunk bed).

 

 

4. Like chalk and cheese

To say two things are completely different.

Example: “Despite James and John being identical twins, their characters were as different as chalk and cheese.”

 

5. Taking the mickey

This one is not Disney-related but means to make fun of someone or something.

Example: “We take the mickey out of Mr. Brown quite a lot, actually.”

 

 

6. An arm and a leg

That something is very expensive.

Example: “I want to buy a house by the beach, but it may cost me an arm and a leg.”

 

7. Hit the nail on the head

Means to have done or said something exactly right.

Example: “I couldn’t have said it better. You hit the nail on the head.”

 

8. Method to my madness

While what you are doing may be strange to someone, you have good reasoning and structure for it.

Example: “At the start of his presentation, it seemed that he was out of his mind, but when he finished, we saw that there’s a method in his madness.”

みなさんが英語を勉強する際に難しいと感じる理由の一つに、熟語の複雑さがあったりしませんか？

そして熟語といえば、イギリス英語独特の言い回しがあるのをご存じですか？

 

アメリカ英語、イギリス英語それぞれ独特に発展させてきた表現ですが、最近は文化やメディアが発達するに伴って、それぞれが徐々にお互いの文化に馴染んできたのではないでしょうか。

 

もちろん私たちネイティブスピーカーでさえも、他の国で使われている独特の表現について時々正しく意味を理解するのが難しい時があります。

 

今日はそんな表現をいくつかご紹介します。

 

1. A penny for your thoughts

「相手に考えていることを自分に共有してもらいたい時」に使える表現です。

 

2. I’ll give you a bell

「後ほど電話で連絡するね」といいたい時に使える表現です。

 

3. Bagsy

「それは自分のものである」ということを表す表現です。

アメリカ英語でいうところの”Shotgun”というフレーズと同じ意味になります。

 

4. Like chalk and cheese

「2つの物が全く異なっている」ことを表す表現です。

 

5. Taking the mickey

（ミッキーと付いていますが、ディズニーランドのミッキーとは全く関係がありません。）

「誰かをばかにしたり、笑う」時に使える表現です。

 

6. An arm and a leg

物に対して、「とても高価である」ことを表す際に使えます。

 

7. Hit the nail on the head

物事や人の言った事に対して、「核心を突く」という意味です。

 

8. Method to my madness

「自分の考えや行動が他の人にはおかしいように思えるが、実際には自分なりの理由や筋が通っている」

というような意味のフレーズです。
