Are you enjoying the National Holiday? Today is sport’s day, although the name might be misleading because schools aren’t actually holding their sport’s day today. It was originally held on October 10th to commemorate the anniversary of the opening ceremony of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. In 2000 it was changed to the second Monday of October in accordance with the Happy Monday System. There are National holidays throughout the year that have been changed to Monday to give people a long weekend. If you say “Happy Mondays” in Ireland, people might think of the band from England who were very popular in the 90s. Here in Japan, it means the government wanted people to enjoy a long weekend. Many schools hold their sports day close to this time, but not today. In Ireland on school sport’s days, the parents just watch as the children take part in events. In Japan, however, things are a little different. When my daughter was in kindergarten, I had to help her in some events every year, such as the ball toss. I think in elementary school now I won’t have to take part any more. Another difference is that the sport’s day events in Japan are so varied compared with what I did back in Ireland. We had the standard running races, long jump, high jumps, discuss, and not much else. Here in Japan there are all sorts of weird and wonderful events that the students take part in. They have 3-legged races, tug of war and many other events that my students struggle to explain to me. I think there are still many Japanese sport’s day events I haven’t even heard of. What are your memories of sport’s day?

祝日は楽しく過ごせましたか？？今日はなんとスポーツの日です！！

「スポーツの日」とは言っても、

学校では特別なにかのスポーツイベントをする訳ではないので、混乱してしまいますよね

 

もともとは10月10日　1964年の東京オリンピックを記念するために作られた祝日なんですよ

2000年になって10月の第二月曜日になったとのこと。

 

1年を通して月曜日が祝日になって長期連休になる例のシステムによってそうなったらしいですよ

「ハッピー月曜日システム」と名付けます。

 

アイルランドでハッピーな月曜日と言うと、イングランド出身の90年代に大変人気だったバンドグループを思い浮かべる人が多いことと思います。

ここ日本では、政府が国民に長い休日を楽しんでもらうために行っているようですね。

 

アイルランドでは、スポーツの日というと親が子供たちがスポーツを楽しんでいるのを見ているだけの日ですが、

一方日本では、少し状況が異なるようです。

 

私の娘の幼稚園では、毎年親が玉入れとか何かしらのイベント行事を手伝わないといけません。

小学校ではもう何も手伝わなくていいと良いのですが。。

 

もう一つの私の故郷と日本のスポーツの日で異なることは、競技内容です。

アイルランドでは、ほんとに一般的な競争やロングジャンプ、ハイジャンプなどをするのですが、

日本では色んな面白い競技がありました

 

3本足競争やら綱引きやら、私のクラスの生徒たちが難しそうしながら説明してくれました。

どうやら、まだまだこの国のスポーツの日には私が聞いたこともないような競技があるのだろうと思います。
