Hello everyone,

How are you doing? I hope you’re having a good week and enjoying the start of spring. This weekend the cherry blossoms should be in bloom so I’m looking forward to hanami parties. There are spring grammar classes happening in the mornings and our students are working hard. I’ve been hearing about students’s trips to places like Tokyo, Okinama and Australia too. I’m jealous and interested to hear about the fun things they’ve done. The application period for the next round of the Eiken test is open. I’m sure many of our students will be successful this time around too. Good luck and challenge yourself. Also, I’d like to remind you that we are taking bookings for the English camp. It really is a great experience and a chance to use English outside of the classroom and try new things. Not many English schools have an event like this and the way we do our English camp is unique to Hario so I recommend anyone interested to try, whether you’ve been camping before or not. We took feedback after previous camps and it was 100% positive.

In the news back in the UK, the pound coin is being replaced. The old coin is round but the new one is 12 sided, or a dodecahedron. One pound is worth about 100 Japanese yen. I keep a set of US and British coins as they are useful in class sometimes. Occasionally, I challenge the students to tell which is which. It’s actually not that hard if you take a careful look. UK coins all have Queen Elizabeth’s portrait on one side of them. The US coins have famous people or places from the USA like former presidents Abraham Lincoln and George Washington or the Hawaiin Islands or the White House. You can find out a lot about a country by looking at its money. I’ll need to use or replace my pound coin before October or else it’ll become worthless. Fortunately, I’m going back to England to visit family in Golden Week. I’ll take back my old pound coin and bring back a shiny new one.

いかがお過ごしですか。春の始まりを良いスタートが切れるといいですね今週末は桜の開花が期待できるので花見を楽しみにしています。HARIOの生徒さんは春期講習で一生懸英語の勉強に命取り組んでくれています。また春休みということで、東京、オーストラリア、沖縄などいろいろな所へ旅行に出かけられている生徒さんもいます。うらやましいですが、皆さんのお土産話を聞くのを楽しみにしています。英検の次回受験の申し込みも始まりました。今回の英検も多くの生徒さんが良い結果を出すことと思います受験される皆さんは頑張ってください。

そして私からはキャンプのお知らせをさせて下さい。とても良い経験になること間違いないですし、教室の外で英語を使うことができるチャンスでもあります。このような企画がある学校はそう多くはありませんし、とてもユニークなものですから是非ご検討頂ければと思います。これまでのキャンプに参加して生徒さん、親御様からのアンケートにおいてもプラスの意見が100％でしたのでそちらも参考にしていただければお思います。

イギリスのニュースでは、1ポンドコインが新しく生まれ変わるという話です。古いものは丸型でしたが、新しいものは12角になっています。1ポンド硬貨は日本の100円硬貨に相当します。私は時々クラスで使えるようにアメリカ、イギリス両方の通貨を教室においてあります。時々生徒の皆さんにどちらがどちらか聞きますが、実際じっくり見てみるとそれほど難しくはありません。イギリスのコインにはすべてどちらかの面にエリザベス女王の肖像画が描かれています。一方アメリカのお金には有名人、例えば全大統領のリンカーン氏やワシントン氏や有名な場所、例えばハワイ島やホワイトハウスなどが描かれています。10月前までに使うか交換するなりして無駄にしないようにしたいです。幸運にも、ゴールデンウィークにイギリスにもどる予定なので日本にある古いものを持って行って、キラキラの新しいコインを持ち帰って来たいと思います
