What`s in a middle name?　ミドルネームは何？

Hello everyone,

Taking a passport photo of a one year old is more difficult than you think! We are getting my daughter a passport this week because she will make her first ever trip to Ireland in Golden Week. I was looking at my daughter`s middle name on the document and I realized how rare it is to have one here in Japan. When she starts school, she might be the only child with a middle name. In Ireland everyone has a middle name, and it usually has some meaning behind it. For example, my full name is Alan William Phillips. My great grandfather`s name is William, and he had the same birthday as me, so my parents gave me that middle name. In Ireland, middle names often come from family members. Both of my brother`s middle names are our grandfather`s first names. Some people even use their middle name as their first name. Two of my friends do this, and it can cause confusion when they are using legal documents such as I.D. cards! Not all middle names have meaning however, my daughter`s is Amelie. We just like that name. I`ve yet to meet a Japanese person with a middle name, but I`ve heard it is possible.

1歳児のパスポート用の写真を撮るのは思っていたよりとても難しいですね。

ゴールデンウィークに娘をアイルランドに連れて行く為、彼女のパスポートを作っています。書類に書いてある彼女のミドルネームを見ていて、ここ日本でミドルネームがあるのはとってもレアなことだなと改めて思いました。彼女が学校に行きだした時、恐らくミドルネームがあるのは彼女だけでしょう。アイルランドではみんなミドルネームを持っており、それぞれに名前の意味があります例えば、私のフルネームはアラン・ウィリアム・フィリップスです。私の祖父の名前はウィリアムで誕生日が私と同じでした。なので私の両親は私にこのミドルネームを付けてくれたのです。アイルランドではミドルネームは大体家族の名前から来ます。私の兄弟2人のミドルネームも祖父の名です。また中にはミドルネームをファーストネームとして使う人もいます。私の友人2人はそのようにしています。その為、IDカードを作る時なんかには混乱する原因になったりします
しかし全てのミドルネームに意味がある訳ではありません。私の娘のミドルネームはアミリーです。私達はただこの名前が好きなのです。まだミドルネームのある日本の方には会った事が無いですが、今後会う
