Hello everyone,

There’s a chill in the air! The unseasonably warm weather is gone, and the real cold of winter has finally arrived. We had quite a few weeks of warm weather last month so I think we were lucky to have such a nice winter so far. Temperatures might drop below zero tonight so wrap up warm! I heard that Ireland had the wettest December in recorded history last month. My parents told me that it rained almost every day and there was flooding in many parts of western Ireland. Ireland always has a big grey cloud in the sky throughout winter, and it rains regularly. It’s a big contrast to the dry and sunny weather we have in Japan.

Here at Hario this week, we are back in full swing after the winter holidays. I have been talking to our students about what they did over the vacation. Most of them have the same tradition of visiting relatives and eating osechi, soba and mochi, which are traditional New Year foods. Everyone seems to watch the same TV show on New Years’ Eve. It’s a countdown to the New Year with live music from the most popular artists in Japan. I think it’s part of the tradition now to watch that show with friends and family. Many people wake up early at around 5am to watch the sun rise on January 1^st. I decided against that this year, my sleep is too important!

みなさんこんにちは。

最近はとても寒いですね。暖冬は終わってしまったようですやっと本来の冬がやってきたという感じですね。先月は暖かい日が続き、過ごしやすい冬が続いてくれてラッキーでしたね。今晩は気温が0度まで下がるようです。暖かくしてお休みください。アイルランドでは先月、これまでで一番雨が多かったようです。私の両親の話によると毎日ほぼ毎日雨が降り、アイルランド西部で多くの洪水も発生したようですアイルランドでは冬になると大きなグレーの雲がずっとかかり、断続的に雨が降り続きます。日本のようにカラッとした晴れが多い日本の冬とは対照的でした。

今週HARIOではお正月休み明けから1週間になります。休みの期間は何をしたのか多くの生徒さんと話しをしています。多くの生徒さんは親戚を訪ね、お正月の伝統的な料理であるおせちやそば、お餅を食べたということでした大晦日の夜はほとんどの皆さんが紅白歌合戦を見たようですね。それをみながら家族や友人と過ごすのもまた伝統になってきているように思います。多くの人は初日の出を見るために早起きをするようですが、私は今年はずっと寝ていました。ゆっくりと睡眠をとりたかったので
