How’s 2016 going so far? There have been lots of clear blue skies and Mt. Fuji looks amazing at the moment. You might know that 2016 is the Year of the Monkey. Let me tell you about some English words and phrases that use ‘monkey’. Monkey business means any sort of bad behaviour. A useful phrase for any teacher or parent is, ‘Stop that monkey business right now!’, don’t you think. A monkey on your back is a difficult problem that’s hard to resolve. You might say, ‘That report was a monkey on my back. I’m glad I finished it. Now I can relax.’ Chunky Monkey Ice Cream is not, in fact, made out of monkeys. It’s got bananas in it, which monkeys love, and hence the name. In the same way, kitsune udon, is not made from foxes. It contains fried tofu, which apparently foxes love. Finally, Monkey see, monkey do describes a way of learning where you just copying something without understanding why or whether it’s a good thing to do or not, because wild animals learn a lot by imitation.

みなさんこんにちは。

2016年になりましたが、いかがおすごしですかこのところ晴天が続き、富士山が綺麗ですね。2016年は申年というのは皆さんご存知かと思います。ということで”猿”にまつわる英語のフレーズなどを紹介させて頂きたいと思います。”Monkey business”(直訳で猿の仕事）は悪いしぐさを表します。これを使いご両親や先生方にとって使えるフレーズが”Stop that monkey business right now”というフレーズです。何か子供たちが悪いしぐさをしている場合、”そのしぐさをやめなさい”という意味になります。”A monkey on your back”は解決が難しい問題という意味で使われます。”The report was a monkey on my back” そのレポートは難しかったよ。”I’m glad I finished it”終わって良かった”というような使い方ができるかもしれません。そしてリラックスする時間です。”Chunky Monkey Ice Cream”なんかを食べます。実際、猿からできているわけではありませんが猿の好きなバナナが入っているアイスクリームです。きつねうどんの上げ豆腐と同じようなものですねそして最後に”Monkey see, Monkey do”というフレーズです。あることを良い事悪い事どちらかもわからず、ただある事をまねをする時に使えます。野生動物はただ真似をして物事を覚えますからね。
