Judging the Speech Contest スピーチコンテストの審査

Hello everyone,

How are you? As you probably know by now, our annual speech contest is on Saturday. We ready to go and looking forward to it. I thought I’d write today about how the speeches are judged and the winners are chosen.

We have 3 judges. They are all English teachers who work in Fuji. Their names are Deloy, Jerry and Mike. They are from the USA, New Zealand and Australia respectively. They each get a score sheet. There are a total of 25 points available for each speech for each judge so every student gets a final score out of 75. We don’t announce these but we use them to decide the first, second, and third prize winners. The marks are as follows:

Presentation – 5 points

This covers smiling, eye contact, using gestures and other body language. Are you making the audience interested and sharing the emotion of your speech?

Speed – 3 points

You can lose points for being too fast or too slow or for pausing if you forget your words. You can get points for using pausing to add drama to your speech?

Pronunciation – 10 points

This is the most important aspect and where the most points are given. First of all, are you speaking loudly and clearly？ No mumbling please. Also, you don’t need to shout. Next, are you speaking smoothly and naturally? (No katakana English please!) After that, make sure you say every part of every word. Lastly, be careful to say each word correctly. Some sounds that are difficult for Japanese speakers of English include l/r, v/b, th/s and lots of vowel sounds like the ow in owl.

Intonation – 5 points

Are you speaking like a robot? If so, please use intonation. Vary the pitch, speed and rhythm of your voice to help tell the story of your speech. Stress the important words to make your speech easy to understand.

Effort and Enthusiasm – 2 points

Did you try your best? Did you keep up your energy level from the start of your speech until the finish?

Total – 25 points

Alan and I have being giving advice and coaching to all of our students. Remember what we’ve said and try your best. But above all, relax and enjoy the experience.

みなさんこんにちは。
お元気ですか？皆さんご存知かと思いますが、HARIOの1年に1度のスピーチコンテストがいよいよ今週の土曜日に開催されます。私はとても楽しみにしています。そこで今日はどのように審査されどのように入賞者が決まるかお話したいと思います。
審査員は全部で3名います。彼らは皆、富士でALTなどをしているネイティブスピーカーです。今年は、デロイさん、ジェリーさん、マイクさんの3名です。出身はそれぞれアメリカ、ニュージーランド、オーストラリアです。彼らにはそれぞれ得点表を配ります。各審査員の最高得点は25点になり、3名分を合わせると75点満点ということになります。得点は発表しませんがこの得点を基に1位、2位、3位を決定します。得点の内訳は次のようになります。

プレゼンテーション…5点満点
笑顔、アイコンタクト、表情やジェスチャー、声のトーンを変えるなどの「表現」がこの項目に含まれます。
聞いているお客さんをに興味を持ってもらえるようなしゃべり方ができていますか？

スピード…3点満点
スピーチの単語を忘れたり、話すのが速すぎたり遅すぎたりすると減点の対象となります。

発音…10点満点
この項目が一番大きな配点となっており、大事な項目です。まずはじめに、皆さんは大きな声ではっきりと話せていますか？モグモグせずにしましょうね。しかし、さけぶのもやめて下さい。
次に、滑らかに自然な話し方ができていますか？（カタカナ英語は絶対にやめましょう）次いで、1語1語忘れることなく話してください。最後にその単語を話すときは正しく発音して下さい。l/r, v/b, th/sや母音がある単語は日本人の皆さんにとっては難しい単語も中にはありますからね。

イントネーション…5点満点
話すときにロボットの様に話していませんか？もしそうであれば、イントネーションを使ってください。ピッチや速さ、リズムの変え、スピーチにアクセントを加えます。スピーチを聞いてもらいやすくする為にも、大事な単語は協調して下さい。

努力と熱意…2点満点
さてベストを尽くせましたか？最初から最後まで元気よく言えましたか？

これで合計25点満点になります。

これまで私やアランが伝えたポイントをぜひ覚えておいて下さい。そしてベストを尽くしてください。でもやはり最後はこの経験を楽しんでほしいと思います。
