Hello everyone,

How’s life with you? It’s a hot and humid summer. Remember to drink lots of water. Many of our students are starting their summer holidays this week. Please find time to relax and enjoy yourself as well as studying and going to your school clubs. Hario has special summer classes for the next few weeks. See you there.

ご機嫌いかがですか。蒸し暑い夏の日ですね。
水分を十分にとってくださいね。
今週は、生徒達のほとんどが夏休みになるようです。
勉強や部活をがんばるのも大事ですが、ゆっくりと夏休みをエンジョイすることも忘れないでくださいね。
来週から、英会話の「夏期講習」も始まります。お申込みされた皆さん、お待ちしてます。

If you watch Japanese variety TV, you might have seen an American guy called Atsugiri Jason and his catchphrase, “Why? Japanese People, Why!’. He gets comically angry about inconsistencies and illogical aspects of the Japanese language and especially the kanji characters. He’s funny and as a student of Japanese, I understand his frustration.

ところで、皆さんがバラエティー番組を見ているならご存じかもしれません。
「厚切りジェイソン」さんというアメリカ人のコメディアンが
「Why? Japanese People, why!!」というコントです。
彼は、日本語で疑問をもったとき、特に、漢字で疑問をもったときに
この言葉をいいます。彼はとても面白いです。私は彼の気持ちがわかります。

One 一　OK, one line. Easy.
Two 二　Two lines, sure.
Three 三　Three lines, there’s a pattern here.
Four 四　What? Why? Japanese people, Why?

That is one of his routines.

例えばこんな感じです。
漢字の「一」。横に一線。うん、わかりやすい。
漢字の「二」。横に二線。理解できます。
漢字の「三」。横に三線。なるほど、きまりが解ってきたぞ。
漢字の「四」。なんだって？なんでこうなるの、日本人、なんでだ！！

これが彼のコントの一例です。

However, all languages have inconsistencies and illogical aspects to them because they evolve from human interaction and aren’t created by robots. English is the same. Let me demonstrate.

しかし、すべての言語において矛盾や法則崩れが存在します。言葉というのはロボットによって作られているわけではなく、人類とともに進化してきたからです。それは英語も一緒です。少しデモンストレーションさせて下さい。

Look at the word below:
次の単語を見て下さい。

ghoti

How do you think it should be pronounced? /gɑtɪ/, <em>GOTI</em>, ゴティ　Perhaps?

Pronounce the ‘gh’ the same as in ‘laugh’.
Pronounce the ‘o’ the same as in ‘women’.
Pronounce the ‘ti’ the same as in ‘station’.

みなさんはどのように発音すると思いますか？ゴティでしょうか？

この単語の”gh”は”laugh”の”gh”と同じ発音です。
“o”は”women”と同じ発音です。
“ti”は”station”と同じ発音です。

Put it altogether and what do you get? /fɪʃ/, <em>FISH</em>, フィシュ

This is a well known demonstration of the irregularities in English spelling. English grammar too is also full of wierd rules and exceptions. You may be forgiven for wanting to shout, ‘Why? English People, Why?!’ sometimes when you are learning English. That’s part of the challenge but also part of the fun of learning a language, I think.

これらを一緒にするとfish（魚）の発音になります。

これは英語のスペルの不規則性を説明する有名な例です。英語の文法もまた沢山の変なルールでいっぱいです。もしかしたら皆さんも英語の勉強をしている時”Why English people, why?”と叫びたくなるかもしれませんね。チャレンジの部分もあるかもしれませんが、と同時に言葉を学ぶ楽しい部分でもあると思います。
