Hello everyone,

I’m back! I went away for a week to attend my brother Christopher’s wedding in Derry, Northern Ireland. I got back to Fuji on Tuesday night. While I was away Sachiyo and Alan covered my classes. Everyone ended up teaching different classes than usual. It must have been a busy week for all the staff covering my absence so I’m very grateful. I missed two birthdays while I was away so, ‘Happy Birthday!’ to Sachiyo and Alan.

 

みなさん、こんにちは。

1週間、弟の結婚式に出席する為にアイルランドへ行っていましたが火曜日の夜に富士に戻ってきました。その間、サチヨとアランがクラスを担当してくれました。1週間忙しかったと思います。スタッフの皆さんには感謝します。そして私がいない間、2つのバースデーがありましたがお祝いすることが出来なかったので、「サチヨ、アラン、お二人ともお誕生日おめでとう！」

 

It was a whirlwind trip. I spent 3 of the 7 days travelling to get there and coming back but I had an amazing time. The wedding was in Derry or Londonderry, the home towm of my new sister-in-law, Elaine. It has two names so they call it ‘Stroke City’ (This sign, ‘/’ is called a stroke). Derry is a beautiful city with historical city walls. It’s mostly a very peaceful place now but until recently Northern Ireland had a violent history with armed groups fighting over whether or not Northern Ireland should stay in the UK or become part of Ireland, and lots of British Army soldiers there. This history is remembered in large murals of the walls of houses in certain areas of the city. I visited that area and was very interested in the history. I’m glad that it’s a peaceful place now. I also visited the Giants Causeway, a UNESCO world heritage site, which is famous for its strange rocks. They are formed naturally, but the rocks are shaped in squares and hexagons and have straight lines. It’s very impressive to see close up. I recommend Northern Ireland as a great place to visit.

 

今回の旅は物凄く慌ただしいものでした。7日の内、3日は移動していましたがいい時間を過ごすことができました。結婚式の行われたデリーまたはロンドンデリーという町は、義理の妹になったイレインの故郷です。2つの名前があることから’ストロークシティ’と呼ばれています。
(‘/’のサインがストロークと呼ばれる為)デリーは昔から使われていた防壁がある美しい町でした。今では凄く穏やかな町ですが、つい最近(1992年）まで北アイルランドがイギリスの一国としてとどまるか、アイルランドの一部となるかで紛争があった町でした。この歴史を忘れない為に大きな壁画が作られ今も残っています。私はそこを訪れ、歴史に興味を持ちました。今現在は平和な町で良かったと感じました。また”ジャイアントコーズウェイ”というユネスコ世界遺産も見てきました。奇妙な石として有名だそうで、自然に並んでいるのですが形は正方形をしていたり6角形をしていたりします。近くで見ると感動的でした。北アイルランド、面白いところなのでお勧めです。

The wedding itself was lovely. It was held in a church with a reception in the hotel after. All the familiar wedding traditions were there; the bride in a white dress, exchanging rings, cutting the wedding cake, speeches, the first dance. Many friends and family traveled far to attend. I got to meet my youngest nephew for the first time. I spent some time with my new sister-in-law and her family. The Northern Ireland dialect, Ulster English, is very strong but after a day or two I tuned into it and could understand. I had a great time, saw friends and family who I hadn’t seen for years and made new friends too.

 

さて結婚式はというと、とても素敵なものでした。ホテルのレセプションの後、教会で行われました。

白いドレスの花嫁、指輪交換、ウェディングケーキ入刀、スピーチ、ダンスなど感動的でした。

多くの友人や家族の人達が出席する為に集まり、初めて甥っ子にも会う事ができました。そして新婦と新婦の家族と過ごす時間も持つことができました。北アイルランドの訛りはとてもきつかったですが、2,3日すると慣れてきて理解することができました。新しい友達もでき、何年も会っていなかった家族、友人と会うことができて、とてもいい時間を過ごすことができました。
