Hello everyone,

Yesterday was the 4th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake that caused a big tsunami and led to the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant disaster. 18,000 people lost their lives. Many more lost their homes from damage or radiation quarantine. A large number of those people are still in temporary housing and haven’t gone back to their homes. Some may never go back. There has been lots of rebuilding done in those areas, but lots more to be done. The government says the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant will take 40 years to clean up. So yesterday, at 2:46pm, we observed a minute’s silence to remember those events. Unfortunately, for those of us who live in Japan, there is always the risk of an earthquake. I’m reminded of that every time I go running along the beach and see the tsunami defences. Japan always manages to recover from these natural disasters and in times of crisis the Japanese people stay calm, co-operate and support each other. That’s what I remember most from the earthquake 4 years ago and it’s one of the things I admire most about this country.

みなさんこんにちは、

大津波と福島の原発事故を引き起こした東北大震災から、昨日で4年が経ちました。1万8千人が亡命をおとし、もっと多くの人々が家を失いました。たくさんの人々がいまだに仮設住宅でくらし、家に帰ることができません。二度と帰れない人もいます。再建された建物はたくさんありますが、これからのものもまだまだあります。政府は福島の原子力発電所を一掃するには40年かかると言っています。昨日の2時46分、私達も黙とうを行いました。不運なことに、日本に住む私たちにはいつでも地震の危険が付きまとっています。海岸沿いで防波堤を見るたびにいつもそのことを思い出します。日本はいつの時も自然災害からの復興復旧をなしとげており、日本人は危機の時にはいつでも落ち着いて、互いに協力し、支えあっています。4年前の震災のときにはそのことが最も印象的でした。日本のこのようなところを本当に敬服します。
