St. Patrick’s Day 聖パトリックの祝日

Hello everyone,

I hope you’re all well and haven’t been affected by any hay fever this week. It seems to be peak season for hay fever sufferers and there has been a cold virus going around recently too. That’s why you see so many people wearing masks these past couple of weeks. I had never seen anyone wear a mask before I came to Japan. The first time I came here I was very surprised to see people wearing masks. It’s a very rare thing to see in Europe. Wearing masks for hay fever and colds never caught on over there. But here in Japan it’s common sense to protect yourself and others from spreading diseases.
There are two colourful holidays coming soon. First we will have “White Day” on Saturday, where all of the men who received sweets on Valentine’s Day repay the favour and give the women sweets in return. Next Tuesday is Saint Patrick’s Day, an Irish holiday where people wear green and have parades to celebrate being Irish. Saint Patrick came from Wales to Ireland around 1,600 years ago (400 A.D.) and he is credited with bringing Christianity there. He is also said to have rid Ireland of snakes. I’m not sure how true that is, but we don’t have snakes! He used a shamrock (a type of clover) to symbolise religion and to this day you will see shamrocks everywhere on St. Patrick’s Day. There are parades all over the World held by Irish people, from New York to Australia. Even Tokyo has had a parade every year since 1992. It’s traditional to wear green, so if you have anything green wear it next Tuesday. My mother sent us St. Patrick’s Day decorations to put up here at Hario. You’ll find shamrocks and Irish flags everywhere. Have a look out for our leprechaun! He’s a little fairy dressed in green. Legend has it that if you catch him you can have his gold.

みなさんこんにちは、
みなさんが花粉症にかかっていないといいのですが。今は花粉が一番多い時期で、また風邪のウイルスも多いようです。たくさんの人々がマスクをつけていますからね。日本に来るまでは、マスクをつけている人をみたことがなかったです初めて日本に来て、マスクの人を見た時にはとてもおどろきました。ヨーロッパではほとんど見ない光景です。花粉症や風邪でマスクをつけるということはないのです。でも日本ではこれが、自身を守ったり、病気が他の人たちに広がってしまうのを防ぐための一般的な予防です。

二つのカラフルなお祝いの日が迫っています。ひとつは土曜日にある、「ホワイトディ」。バレンタインにチョコをもらったすべての男性たちが、女性にお返しをします。
そして来週の火曜日は聖パトリックの祝日です。これはアイルランドでの国民の祝日で、人々は緑を身に着けパレードをして、アイルランド人であることをお祝いします。聖パトリックは約1600年前（紀元400年）にウェールズからアイルランドに渡り、キリスト教を伝道しました。彼はまた、アイルランドから蛇を消したとも言われています。これが本当であるかはわかりませんが、アイルランドには蛇はいません。彼は布教にシャムロック（クローバーの一種）を使ったため、聖パトリックの祝日には、いたるところでシャムロックを見かけます。この日はニューヨークやオーストラリアなど、世界中でアイルランド人によるパレードが行われます。東京でも1992年からパレードが行われています。緑を身に着けることが伝統ですので、何か緑色のものがあれば、来週の火曜日に身に着けてきてくださいね今ハリオにあるパトリックディの装飾は、私の母がアイルランドから送ってくれたものです。シャムロックとアイルランドの旗がたくさんあるでしょう？レプラコーンも見て下さい！。レプラコーンは緑色の服を着た、小さな妖精です。もし彼を捕まえたら、金貨がもらえるという伝説があります。
