The Doll Festival　ひな祭り

Hello everyone,

March is almost here, and next week we will have the “Hinamatsuri” or “Doll Festival” on March 3rd. I was unfamiliar with the Doll Festival before, but now that we have a daughter, we have put out the doll display at home. I was surprised at how large and beautiful the dolls and decorations were. There is a big red carpet with steps and it looks like two of the dolls are getting married. There are also mini peach trees and little mochi sculptures. There is lots of intricate detail in the dolls clothes and decorations. This ancient tradition dates all the way back to the Heian period (794 – 1185). It was originally thought that the dolls possessed the power to contain bad spirits. People used to float the dolls down rivers to take away the bad spirits but they have since stopped because fishermen were catching the dolls in their nets!
This week at Hario you can get more information about our camp in May. It promises to be great fun so I recommend you to sign up as soon as you can. Last year`s camp was a huge success and any student who went will tell you they had a fantastic time. I`m excited about this year`s camp already!

みなさんこんにちは。
3月がすぐそこまで来ていますね。来週3月3日は「Doll Festival」「雛祭り」です。以前は雛祭りについてよく知りませんでしたが、娘が誕生した今、家では雛人形を飾りました。お雛様の飾りがとても大きく美しいことに驚きました。段には赤いカーペットが敷かれ、二体の人形が結婚式をしているように見えます。また、小さな桃の木と小さなお餅も置かれています。この古くからの伝統は、794～1185年の平安時代にさかのぼるようです。平安時代は「雛流し」という、厄よけの為に川に人形を流す行事が行われていました。しかしこれは、人形が漁師さんたちの網にかかってしまう問題があったため、現在では行われなくなったようです。

今週、ハリオでは5月に行われるイングリッシュキャンプのお知らせ＆申込書をお配りしています。とても楽しいキャンプになること間違いありませんので、早めにお申込みくださいね。去年のキャンプについては、参加した生徒さんたちに聞けば、「とても楽しかった！」という答えが返ってくるでしょう。今年のキャンプもとても楽しみにしています。
