Happy Valentine`s Day!　　バレンタインデー

Hello everyone,

Did you get any chocolate last Saturday? It was Valentine’s Day, and that means women all over Japan gave chocolate to men. It`s different in Ireland, where men usually give chocolate, or another gift, to their partner. Here in Japan men receive chocolates from friends and family. It`s a good idea to keep track of who gives you a gift on Valentine’s Day, because men should repay the favour on White Day, March 14th. White Day was started by confectionery companies in Japan in the 70`s to get men to give another gift of candy to women. It used to be white chocolate (hence the name) but now any chocolate will do.
Last weekend a friend of mine from Ireland came to visit us here in Fuji. I haven`t seen him in over a year so it was great to catch up. On Sunday we took a trip to Kunosan Toshogu Shrine on Shimizu. The best way to get there is via the Nihondaira ropeway, a cable car ride across the mountain. The views from the cable car and the shrine are spectacular. You can see hundreds of greenhouses where they grow strawberries, which Shimizu is famous for this time of the year. The shrine itself is really beautiful to walk around in. There are several buildings and a tomb where a famous “shogun” is buried. It`s well worth the journey out to Shimizu.

先週の土曜日はチョコレートをもらえましたか？日本のバレンタインは女性が男性にチョコレートをあげると思いますが、アイルランドでは少し違います。男性が女性に対しチョコレートや贈り物を渡します。日本では男性が家族や友人などからチョコレートを受け取り、3月14日になるとお返しをします。ホワイトデーの習慣は日本の製菓会社1970年代に男性がもっと女性に対し贈り物をするようにと始めたものです。お返しは以前はホワイトチョコレートでしたが、今ではどんなチョコレートでもいいようです。

先週末、私の友人が私達を訪ねに富士にやってきました。1年以上会っていませんでしたので、いろいろな事を話しました。日曜には清水にある久能山東照宮へ行ってきました。東照宮へ行くには日本平ロープウェイを使うのが一番です。ロープウェイや頂上からの景色はとても綺麗でした。久能山周辺ではこの時期有名になるイチゴ狩りの温室ハウスが沢山見られました。
東照宮の建物自体もとても綺麗でした。将軍が埋葬されている墓地もありました。まだまだ清水を探検する価値がありそうです。
