Snow and sales　雪とセール

Hello everyone,

It’s snowing! In Ireland that is. As strange as it sounds, it rarely snows in Ireland. While the country is situated farther north than Hokaido, the Gulf Stream from the Atlantic brings relatively mild weather. There is usually some light snowfall once or twice per year in Dublin, but it rarely stays on the ground. There has been a lot of snowfall all around Japan recently, but Fuji hardly ever sees snow. We must have some of the mildest winters in the country here. I heard that the snow we had last February was the first time in years for this city.

Have you ventured out into the January sales yet? Shopping malls around the country are packed with people looking for bargains. I went to Shizuoka last weekend and I couldn’t believe how busy the stores were. It makes sense however, as every shop seemed to have a big sale going on. It’s the same in Ireland every January. It’s the “sale season”, a time when everything is discounted and stores have all the best offers. As crowded as it is in January, it’s not nearly as busy as December in Ireland. If you venture out to shopping malls during the Christmas rush you might have trouble moving at all!

雪だぁ！アイルランドに雪が降るとこんな感じです。意外かもしれませんが、アイルランドではめったに雪は降りません。この国は北海道よりも北に位置するのに、大西洋からのメキシコ湾流のおかげで気候は温暖です。ダブリンでは1年に一度か二度雪が舞うことがありますが、積もるようなことはあまりありません。このごろは日本全国で雪が多く降っているようですが、富士市でも雪をみることはありませんね。日本全国の中でも、ここでは最も温暖な冬を過ごせるのではないでしょうか。去年の2月に降った雪が富士市では数年ぶりだったという話を聞きました。

ところで、1月の初売りにはもう行きましたか？あちこちのデパートでは、バーゲンに来る人たちで賑わっています。先週末、静岡に行きましたが、あんなにお店が賑わっているなんて、信じられませんでした。しかしすべての店がビッグセールをやっているので、混雑するのも当然ですよね。アイルランドでも、毎年1月には同じようなことが起こります。「セールの季節」で、すべての品物が割引されます。1月も混雑しますが、アイルランドの12月のデパートはもっと混雑しています。クリスマスシーズンに買い物に行くと、全く動けずに大変なことになってしまいますよ。
