Hello everyone,

I hope you’re having a good week. Typhoon no. 19 came on Monday and we had to cancel the last two classes. Apologies to those affected. This morning I was out running and I saw snow on the top of Mt. Fuji for the first time this autumn after it melted during the summer. It looked lovely.
The last few weeks our students have been busy studying for the Eiken test, the Junior Eiken test, the speech contest as well as their regular English lessons. I’m impressed by the commitment and the motivation of our students. Thank you for all your hard work.
The Nobel Prizes were announced last week. As well as three Japanese physicists winning for Physics, a 17-year-old Pakistani girl won the Peace Prize. Malala Yousafzai grew up in the Swat Valley in Pakistan. It got taken over by the Taliban. The Taliban believe girls should not be allowed to go to school and tried to stop Malala and her classmates from going to school. She documented this in a blog for the BBC and became a target for the Taliban. Two years ago they shot her in the head. She got life saving surgery in the UK, where she now lives and goes to school. Since her recovery, she has become a campaigner for childrens’ rights, and particularly girls’ rights to education. That’s why she won the award.
Japan is a country, like the UK, which places a high value on education and where education is open to everyone. Unfortunately, in many places around the world, like the Swat Valley in Pakistan, this isn’t true. I’m glad Malala won the award and I hope it helps children around the world become more aware of their rights to an education. Education is power.

今週はいかがお過ごしですか？月曜日は台風１９号の影響で夜のクラスがキャンセルになってしまい、申し訳ありませんでした。
今朝は、ランニングの途中で富士山に雪が積もっているのを見ました。今季初めての冠雪で、とても綺麗でした。ここ最近生徒さんたちは、普段のレッスンと同時に、英検、児童英検、スピーチの準備もあり、大忙しです。みなさんの頑張りにとても感心しています。一生懸命とりくんでくれて、ありがとう。

先週、ノーベル賞受賞者が発表されました。３人の日本人物理学者の受賞と同時に、１７歳のパキスタン人の女の子が平和賞を受賞しました。マララ・ユスフザイさんはタリバーンが行政を担っていたパキスタンのスワート渓谷で育ちました。タリバーンは女性は教育を受けるべきではないと主張し、マララさんと彼女のクラスメイトたちが学校に行くのをやめさせようとしました。彼女はこれについてBBCに向けブログで報告し、タリバーンの標的となってしまいました。２年前頭部を撃たれましたが、イギリスで手術を受け、現在はイギリスに住み学校に通っています。回復してからは子供たちの権利や、特に女性の教育を受ける権利を主張するようになりました。これがノーベル平和賞を受賞した理由です。
