みなさんが良い一週間を過ごされていることを願います。
今週末は、私たちの始めてのイングリッシュキャンプです。

Every year our elementary school age students do speech homework. It culminates with our students performing their speeches in front of their parents in class and, for some, our annual speech contest. This homework gives the students many learning opportunities. They can learn public speaking skills from giving a speech and gain confidence and experience. They can also learn new English vocabulary personal to them and practice good pronunciation.

毎年、小学生クラスの生徒たちはスピーチホームワークというものがあります。
生徒たちは、クラス内でご両親の前でスピーチを披露したり、何人かは年に一度のスピーチコンテストで発表をします。
この宿題は生徒達にとって、たくさん学べる良い機会です。
生徒達はスピーチによって、公の場で話すスキルを身につけ、自信と経験を得ることができます。
また、新しい語彙を学べ、良い発音の練習にもなります。

It’s my job to translate the speeches from Japanese into English. I have to try to translate the speeches using English which is appropriate to their level of study but also natural and correct. It can be a difficult job but this time is the 4th time I’ve done it so it’s getting somewhat easier. Actually I enjoy doing it. It’s like free Japanese study for me. I learn new Japanese words. Hopefully, for the students they get to do the opposite. I’ve learnt some new vocabulary like ‘濃厚’’のうこう’’noukou‘ which means rich like a rich dessert. Some words are difficult to translate. Many students have ‘今がんばっていること’’Ima ganbatteiru koto‘ as their speech title. It translates as ‘What I’m trying hard at’ or similar. I wish there was a more elegant or shorter way of translating this but I don’t think there is.

生徒たちのスピーチを日本語から英語に翻訳するのは私の仕事です。
生徒たちのレベルに合うように訳すだけでなく、
自然にかつ正しく翻訳しなければなりません。
とても難しい作業ですが、私にとっては4回目の仕事なので、
いくらか易しくなりつつあります。
実際、楽しみながら翻訳ができています。
新しく知る日本語の単語もあり、日本語の勉強が無料でできているようなものです。
生徒たちにとっては、私の逆になると良いと思います。
私は「濃厚」といったような新しい語彙を学びました。
また、多くの生徒は「今がんばっていること」というのをスピーチのタイトルにしていますが、このような言葉は訳すのが難しいです。
私が翻訳したものよりももっと短くて良い表現があるとよいのですが、
英語にそのような表現はないのです。

When writing or translating you’re always searching for the mot juste or the best word or expression to convey what you want to say. It’s a very difficult thing to do. Some writers that I like who I think can do this are the American Ernest Hemmingway and the Japanese author Haruki Murakami. I wish I could speak and write better and always use the best word. By studying a language, reading and listening to people lots and by learning new words you can get closer, I think.

書いたり翻訳したりするときに、言いたいことを伝えるための最も良い表現や言葉を見つけることはとても難しいことです。
私の好きな著者、アメリカ人のアーネスト・ヘミングウェイや日本人の村上春樹はこれができるのだと思います。
もっと上手に話したり、書いたりして、いつでも一番適している言葉を使えたらな、と思います。
言語を勉強したり、読んだり、人の話をたくさん聞いたり、新しい言葉を学んだりすることによって、それに近づくことができるのではないか、と私は思います。
