Hello everyone,

How’s life with you? The English camp is just over a week away. I’m excited about it. We’re making the final preparations and it should be really fun for everyone.
This weekend I’m playing Alan at tennis. I think Alan is pretty good at tennis and plays quite a lot. I, on the other hand, haven’t played tennis since I was a kid, about 20 years ago and I wasn’t particularly good back then. I think I know who’s going to win. Still, it should be good fun. There are some tennis idioms that are commonly used in English. “The ball’s in your court” means it’s your responsibility to do something. For example, if a man asked a woman out on a date and was waiting for her reply, then the ball is in her court. It’s the woman’s decision next and the man can only wait. “Game, set, and match” means game over in tennis and means the same as an English idiom. I think our tennis match will be game, set and match to Alan. Do you play tennis? What sports do you like?

ご機嫌いかがでしょうか？Harioイングリッシュキャンプまで1週間余りとなりました。私は本当に楽しみで仕方ありません。こちらでは現在、最終準備をしているところです。皆さんにとって楽しいものになるのは間違いありません。

さて今週末はアラン先生とテニスをする予定です。アラン先生はとてもテニスが上手く、一方の私はというと子供の時以来、実に約20年、テニスはしていませんでした。その為、子供の時ほど上手くできませんでした。どちらが勝つか、おのずと分かります。それでもやっぱり楽しいものです。英語ではテニスに関わるイディオムが幾つかあります。
“the ball’s in your court”(ボールは君のコートにある）というイディオムは”打ったボールがあなたのコート内にある”ということから”次はあなたが何かする番です”といった意味になります。例えば、男性が女性をデートに誘い返事を待っている時、このイディオムを使うことができます。男性は待つことしかできず、次は女性の決断の番なのです。
もう一つ、”Game, set, and match”というものがあります。テニスでは試合終了、～の勝ち、という意味に、英語のイディオムでも同じ意味で使います。今週末のアラン先生との試合は”game, set, and match to Alan”(アラン先生の勝ち）になると思います。
