Happy St. Patrick`s Day! Last Monday 17th was the day when everyone around the World celebrates their Irish heritage. I got to celebrate in the usual Irish style thanks to a gift of Guinness from Sachiyo. Thanks very much! You can see from the photo I also wore green. Green has become synonymous with Ireland and it`s on our flag. It symbolizes hope in Irish culture, and many people believe that wearing green on St. Patrick`s Day will bring you good luck. We also had green decorations around Hario this week, featuring shamrocks and leprechauns. A shamrock is a type of clover, commonly found in Ireland, and the story is that St. Patrick used it as a symbol of Christianity when he came to Ireland. He was originally from Wales, and came to Ireland around 400A.D. to spread Christianity. He is also said to have removed all of the snakes from Ireland. I`m not sure how true that is, but we have no snakes! A leprechaun is a little man dressed in green, and if you ever see one you`re in luck because they keep a pot of gold for whoever can catch them. There`s not much chance of ever seeing one though because they are totally mythical creatures. There was a Patrick`s Day parade in Harajuku, Tokyo last Sunday, I couldn`t make it but it looks fun from the photos. We seem to have spread out across the World, which is impressive seeing as it`s a small island in the Atlantic with only 4 million people.

Happyセントパトリックデー！

１７日の月曜日は、セントパトリックデーでした。世界中の人々が、アイリッシュの伝統であるこの日を祝います。サチヨからはお祝いにギネスビールをプレゼントされました。サチヨ、ありがとう。

この日とった写真↑にもありますが、私は緑のネクタイをしています。

緑はアイルランドの象徴であり、国旗にも緑色があります。

また、セントパトリックデーに緑の物を身に着けると、よい運がめぐってくると皆信じています。

月曜日と火曜日は、HARIOイングリッシュスクールも、セントパトリックの飾りつけで、グリーンで、

シャムロックやレプラカーンの絵が壁に貼られていました。

シャムロックはクローバーの種類の一つで、アイルランドではよく見られます。

この日の起源は、ウェイル出身のセイントパトリックが、アイルランドにキリスト教を広めたこに感謝をし、彼の命日を祝うものです。また、彼はアイルランドから蛇を除去したとも言われています。

この話は本当か嘘かはわかりませんが、でもアイルランドには本当に蛇がいません。

プラカーンは、グリーンの服をきた小さい妖精です。この妖精は金のつぼを隠し持っていて、彼を見つけるといいことが起こると言われています。（でも実際にはいません）

先週の土曜日に原宿でセントパトリックデーのパレードが行われました。私は行くことができませんでしたが、写真で楽しみました。アイルランドの伝統が世界中に広まっているようです。こんなに小さな、４００万人しかいない人口の国の伝統が広まるなんて、なんだか感動です。
