Hello everyone! Happy New Year!

 

I hope you enjoyed your winter break. I had a lovely time back in England. It was two years since the last time I had been back so I caught up with lots of friends and family whom I hadn’t seen in a long time. I relaxed, ate a lot, drank a lot and came back to Japan rested and looking forward to 2014.

 

2014 is the Year of the Horse. My wife and I went to Yonenomiya Shrine to make a wish for the new year and get our fortune. My mikuji or fortune slip said chukichi or medium lucky. I’m not superstitious so I don’t worry about that kind of thing but it’s a fun tradition. At the shrine there was a special event for kids. You could sit on a horse and fire an arrow at a target. It looked fun. I wish I could have tried it when I was a kid. One of my adult students was born in the Year of the Horse and turns 60 this year. He said it’s traditional to wear red when you a 60. I didn’t know about this custom. There are so many customs in Japan!

There are many idioms and proverbs about horses in English. If you eat like a horse then you have a big appetite. I eat like a horse though it doesn’t look like it because I’m a little thin. Maybe it’s because I have hollow legs?! A dark horse is a person or team that succeeds unexpectedly. Can Japan be the dark horses of the World Cup this year? Flogging a dead horse means continuing to promote a bad idea. Is Prime Minister Abe flogging a dead horse with Abenomics or will it work in the end?

みなさん、こんにちは。あけましておめでとうございます。

みなさん、よいお正月休みを過ごしましたか。

 

私は、故郷のイギリスへ戻り楽しいクリスマスとお正月を過ごしました。

２年ぶりのイギリスだったので、たくさんの友人や親戚家族に会いました。

リラックスでき、沢山飲み食べしました。

日本に戻ってきてゆったりと過ごしました。新年を迎え２０１４年が楽しみです。

 

２０１４年はうま年です。私と妻は米の宮神社に初詣に行きました。

私のおみくじは「中吉」でした。あまりおみくじを信じる方ではありませんが

正月の行事として楽しめます。

神社では子供さん向けのイベントが行われていました。

そのイベントでは、馬にまたがって、矢を的に放つことができました。

もし子供だったらやりたかったのですが・・・

 

私の生徒さんの一人が、うま年で、今年６０才になります。

６０才になると、赤いものを身に着ける慣わしがあるそうです。私はそんな慣わしは知りませんでした。

日本には沢山の慣わしがあるんですね。

 

イギリスでは、「馬」に関するたくさんのイディオムやことわざがあります。

「馬のように食べると、食欲旺盛になる。」

私は馬のように食べますが、食欲旺盛ではないです。私は痩せています。

たぶん、私は食べても太らない体質だからかもしれません。

「ダークホース」（暗い馬）とは、予期せずに成功したり勝利するチームや人を言います。

今年のワールドカップで、日本チームは「ダークホース」ですか？

「Flogging a dead horse」とは、無駄なことをやり続けることを意味します。

安倍首相は、アベノミクスに対して「Flogging a dead horse」ですか？それとも最後には成功するのでしょうか。
