The end of the year is in sight. In three weeks time we shall be saying goodbye to 2013 and ringing in the new year of 2014. Are new years resolutions popluar in Japan? Every year people decide what they will try hard at to change and better themselves for the new year. It can be anything from giving up snacks, to studying more or getting more excercise. Most people in Ireland decide on new years resolutions in January, but they rarely last the full year! I wonder what new years resolutions I will think up this year…I`m not giving up the snacks, they`re too nice! This time around I will be in Ireland for the new year celebrations. It`s often overshadowed by Christmas, whcich is a bigger celebration, but we still celebrate the new year with parties involving friends and family. There`s no particular food or customs for new years in Ireland, apart from a countdown to the new year, and some fireworks. I was in Japan for last years celebration, and noticed many more customs over here, such as the delicious boiled osechi and sashimi platters. I had never seen the midnight tradition of ringing a bell and lighting incense. On new years day we visited the sengen shrine in Fujinomiya. It was extremely full as expected, but a great day out nonetheless, it feels reassuring to make wishes for good luck in the new year.　I think my wishes for good luck were answered this year, let`s see if next year brings more.

もうすぐ年が終わろうとしています。あと３週間ほどで、さらばじゃ２０１３年となり、２０１４年になります。

日本では、「新年の誓い」をしますか

新年に、その年にチャレンジすること、努力することなどを決めます。

新年の誓いはなんでもありです。たとえばスナックを食べないとか・・・勉強をもっとがんばるとか・・・

運動をするようにする・・・とか。

アイルランド人は、１月にこの「新年の誓い」をしますが、ほとんどが年が終わるまでは続きません。

私は２０１４年にどんな誓いをたていようかと考えています。

今年は、スナックを辞めれませんでした。とてもおいしいからです。

今年は新年はアイルランドで祝う予定です。

毎年、クリスマスはもちろん大イベントですが、、新年も友人や家族などと祝います。

アイルランドにはカウントダウンや花火以外に、特別な正月の食べ物や習慣はありません。

去年は正月を日本で祝いました。日本にはたくさんお慣わしがあり、おせち料理や、刺身は美味しいですね。

年末の夜の行事、例えば除夜の鐘などはまだみたことがありませんが、

富士宮の浅間神社にいきました。

そこで願った通り、今年はいい年になりました。来年ももっといい年になりますように。
