Phrasal Verbs

カテゴリー:ブログ

Hello everyone!

I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the warmer weather (even if it is a bit rainy). I especially want to wish good luck to those students who are going to be writing the AIKEN test this weekend!

During our AIKEN Pre-1st classes this month we have been studying Phrasal Verbs. These are verbs that are made up of more than one word and some have different meaning depending on their use. An example of one is “get up” meaning to wake from sleeping or rising from a sitting or lying down position. There are many of these types of verbs! One of them that we enjoying talking about was “blow up”. It was interesting because it had 3 meanings:

1) Blow up – inflate something. Blow up a baloon to fill it with air or gas

2) Blow up – getting very angry

3) Blow up – to explode!

We had fun trying to make a sentence that used all 3 at once like, “Tanaka-san was asked by his wife to ‘blow up’ some baloons, but instead of air he used dynamite. His house was blown up and his wife blew up at him!”

Do you have any favourite Phrasal Verbs? Let me know!

Tanaka-san was asked by his wife to ‘blow up’ some baloons, but instead of air he used dynamite. His house was blown up and his wife blew up at him

田中さんは、妻に風船を膨らますように頼まれたが、彼は空気ではなくダイナマイトで爆発させた。彼の家は、吹き飛んで、妻は夫に激怒した。

皆さんには、お気に入りの熟語ありますか。

マット
