It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

Hello everyone,

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year!” That’s how the famous song by Andy Williams goes. He’s singing about Christmas of course, and now that it’s December we can really get into the festive mood. It’s time for everyone to put up their tree and lights. Actually our tree at home has been up for a month now. My daughter couldn’t wait, so we put ours up at the start of November. Come to think of it, I’ve seen them all over Fuji since Halloween ended. Christmas day is only 3 weeks away now, and children all over the world are writing letters to Santa to ask for a present. This year, of course, many children are asking him to bring an end to the pandemic. It’s been a difficult year for many kids missing school and not being able to visit relatives. I hope their wish comes true next year. It looks like vaccines are being rolled out already. Fingers crossed they are an effective remedy to the crisis, and the world can get back to normal again.

For me, Christmas is all about spending time with family. When I was young my brothers and I couldn’t wait to go downstairs and open presents on Christmas morning, so we would negotiate a time with our parents. We would say we wanted to get up at 5AM. My parents would ask for us to wait until 9AM. Each side would bargain, until we all agreed on a more reasonable time, usually about 7AM. Now that I’m older, I understand why my parents didn’t want to get up so early! I returned to Ireland a few times during the winter vacation, but obviously I can’t this year. So I’ll spend the vacation with my family in Fuji this time. I’m looking forward to opening presents with my daughter. We’ll try the Japanese tradition of eating fried chicken instead of turkey. What are your plans for the vacation?

「今が一年で一番よい時」これは、アンディ・ウィリアムズの有名な歌です。クリスマスの季節、お祭りムードになる１２月。クリスマスツリーや飾りつけを楽しんで。私の家のツリーは、すでに１カ月飾られています。娘が待ちきれなかったからです。クリスマスは、あと３週間後です。世界中の子供達が、サンタに手紙を書いています。もちろん今年の子供達のサンタへの願いは、「コロナが終息してほしい」でしょう。子供達にとっては学校が休校となったり、外出を自粛されたりと厳しい一年になりました。来年は、子供達の願いがかなって、ワクチンが開発され、この状況が終わることを私は望みます。

私のクリスマスは、家族と過ごす時間です。小さい頃、私と弟は、明け方になって一階にいってサンタからのプレゼントを開けるのを楽しみにしていました。私達は、朝５時に起きたかったのですが、両親が９時までまってほしいと言いました。話し合いの結果、朝７時になりました。大人になった今は、両親が早く起きたくない理由が理解できます。日本に来てから、数回は冬のシーズンにアイルランドに帰国しましたが、今年はできません。なので、今年は、富士で家族と過ごします。今の私の楽しみは、娘がサンタからのプレゼントを開ける時です。そしてターキーではなく、日本人らしくケンタッキーを食べます。皆さんはどのようにして、クリスマスを過ごしますか
