Today I am going to talk about the nearest city where I used to live, Hull. I wouldn’t be surprised if you have never heard of the city, as the normal response when I say I’m from Hull to anyone in Japan is “Where?”

It isn’t as well-known as many of the other cities in the UK like Liverpool, Manchester, and of course London, and with a population of 259,778 is only the fourth largest city in Yorkshire after Leeds, York, and Sheffield. (That’s only about 10,000 more than Fuji city.)

Its full name is Kingston-Upon-Hull and dates back to the 12^th Century when it was founded as a port to export wool and only was recognized officially as a city in 1897, but over its history grew into a market town, trading hub, fishing port, and industrial metropolis.

 

It is famous for its non-traditional cream-white telephone boxes, as normally telephone boxes are red in the UK apart from in Hull. This is because it is the only city in the UK with its own independent telecommunication network. This led the city to be the first city in the UK to have full fibre broadband internet for all residents in 2019. Though with the rise of mobile phones the cream-white telephone boxes like their red brethren have started to no longer be used on UK streets, with many finding new uses such as local community book libraries.

The nearby Humber Bridge was the longest single-span suspension bridge in the world when built in 1981 (it is now currently 8^th  in the world). It links the two sides of the River Humber, before its completion if you wished to cross the Humber you would need to take a ferry.

While the city does suffer from a reputation of being lower in the rank of UK cities it does have quite a working city charm and It was even once featured on an episode of the Japanese TV show “Another sky” in 2016.

今回は、私の生まれ故郷のとある町「ハル」について紹介します。

日本で、出身を聞かれて私がハル出身と答えてもきっと誰も分からないような小さな町です。

まぁリバプールやマンチェスターやロンドンのように人口が多い街ではないので、仕方ないですね。

 

 

正式名称は、「キングストン・アポン・ハル」といいます。

遡ること12世紀には、ウールを輸出するための港町で、正式に「町」と世間から認識されるようになったのは1897年になってからでした。

やがて、貿易や漁業が盛んになったり産業で有名な都市にまで発展を遂げました。

 

この町はイギリスではあまり見ない、非伝統的なクリームホワイト色の電話ボックスがある町として有名なんですよ。というのもイギリスで唯一、町全体が独立したネットワーク通信システムを持っている単一自治体なんです！

 

そのような環境にあった町なので、2019年にはイギリス全土で初めて住民全員が高速インターネットを使えるようになったことでも有名な町なんです。

 

その後、携帯電話が流通するようになってからは、おなじみのクリーム色や赤色の電話ボックスは本来の用途では使用されなくなり、今では人々がいらなくなった本を中に持ち込んで保管しておき、誰でも気軽にそこから本を持っていけるような公共の図書館になっているんです！！（イメージが湧くように写真を添付しました！見てみてください）

 

また町の近くにあるハンバーブリッジは建設された当初の1981年には、世界で一番長い単一ケーブルで架けられた橋として有名になりました。（現在は、8位になってしまいましたけどね）

この橋が建設される以前は川を横断するのにフェリーを使うことが必要だったんだと思いますよ。

 

ビジネスの町としての評判はあまりない産業都市ではありますが、アナザースカイで取り上げられたこともありました。

余談ですが、日本の女優中条あやみのお父さんの出身地でもあるので、気になる人は調べてみてください
