Getting Back into the School Routine

Hello everyone,

All of our students seem a little more tired than usual this week. I think that’s because they started back to school. Not only are they getting back into the daily routine, they also had a hectic weekend of finishing their summer homework. I saw it at home myself. My daughter did homework regularly to keep up with the workload, but some of the homework consists of assignments that take longer to finish. Thankfully, she got everything done on time, and only had to worry about getting up earlier in the mornings. I remember having to reset my body-clock at the end of the summer vacation. It’s very easy to fall into a routine of going to bed late and getting up late when there is nothing to wake up for. Once school began again at the end of August, I was effectively jet-lagged for a few days before I could function properly in the mornings. It must be tough to walk to and from school in the August heat. I’m sure our students can’t wait for it to cool down a bit once Autumn arrives. Or “Fall” as the Americans call it. “Fall” comes from the phrase “fall of the leaf,” referring to trees shedding their leaves, while “autumn” comes from the Latin word autumnus and was introduced into English in the 14th century. Whatever you call it, please cool down soon!

今週は、生徒たちがいつもより少し疲れているように見えます。学校が始まったばかりだからでしょうね。

日々の生活リズムに戻るだけでなく、夏休みの宿題を終わらせるために週末は大忙しだったようです。私自身も家でその様子を見ていました。娘は宿題の量に合わせてこまめに取り組んでいましたが、時間のかかる課題も含まれていたので、なかなか大変だったようです。幸い、すべて期限内に終わらせることができて、あとは朝早く起きることだけが心配でした

私も夏休みの終わりには、体内時計をリセットする必要があったのを覚えています。起きる理由がないと、夜更かしして朝寝坊する生活になりがちですよね。8月末に学校が再開すると、数日間はまるで時差ボケのようで、朝はなかなか頭が働きませんでした。8月の暑さの中、学校まで歩いて通うのは本当に大変だと思います。生徒たちも、秋が来て少し涼しくなるのを心待ちにしていることでしょう

ちなみに、アメリカでは「Autumn（秋）」のことを「Fall」と呼びます。「Fall」は「fall of the leaf（葉が落ちる季節）」という表現から来ていて、「Autumn」はラテン語の autumnus に由来し、14世紀に英語に取り入れられた言葉です。呼び方はなんにせよ、早く涼しくなってほしいですね！
