Football (or is it Soccer?)

Hello, this week I would like to talk about the British love of Football (otherwise known as Soccer).

今週はイギリス人のフットボール（別名サッカー）愛について話したいと思います。

When I was a teenager, I would attend many home matches at my local football team, Grimsby Town. While they weren’t the biggest side locally, I enjoyed many cold and wet Saturdays standing in the terraces and supporting my team. Sadly, since I first moved to Japan, I haven’t followed them as much as I used to. In the UK, it is a national pastime and for some a way of life, we love to watch, talk about and play the sport.

英国では、サッカーは国民的な娯楽であり、一部の生活様式であり。我々はサッカーを観戦したり、それについて話したり、もちろんサッカーをプレーすることも大好きなのです

It has its roots in a variety of ancient sports from Greece, Rome, China and even Japan. But the modern sport that we recognise today first emerged in the UK around the 12^th Century. Even then it was a lot rougher and players could even punch the ball. But it wouldn’t be until the 19^th Century that clearer rules would be drawn up and the founding of the Football Association would govern and set out the rules of the sport.

そのルーツは、ギリシャ、ローマ、中国、さらには日本などからのさまざまな古代スポーツにあります。しかし、今日私たちが認識している近代的なスポーツは、12 世紀頃にイギリスで初めて誕生しました。それでも、試合はかなり荒れていて、選手がボールをパンチすることさえできました。しかし、より明確なルールが策定され、サッカー協会の設立によってスポーツのルールが管理され、定められるようになったのは 19 世紀になってからなのです。

While in the UK we are very passionate about the sport being called “Football” in fact the name “Soccer” was first popularly used in the UK. While many believe it to be an Americanism, it actually comes from the name “Association Football” which was first abbreviated to “assoc” and “assoccer” and eventually “soccer” and this was used to tell the difference between “Rugby Football” and “Association Football” in the late 1800s. It wasn’t until later in the 20^th century the UK turned its back on the term favouring calling the sport Football.
