Hello everyone,

It’s almost here! The obon vacation begins this week on Wednesday with mountain day. I was surprised to learn that this holiday was first held in 2016. It’s a very new holiday that was established to coincide with the obon holiday. I suppose this is because there were no official holidays during this time, so the government put a national holiday in there. Mountain day is supposed to be day when we appreciate the mountains all over the country. I find that August is a great time to go up the mountains to cool down. Yesterday, we went to Shiraito falls and I could really feel the difference in temperature compared with Fuji City. We are down at sea-level here, so it can get super-hot and humid. On the other hand, high prefectures, such as Nagano, enjoy much cooler summer weather.

While Mountain Day is the only official holiday of the week, many people celebrate the tradition of obon week. It’s a time when the spirits of ancestors come back to Earth. That reminds me of Halloween in Ireland. People wore ghost costumes because the spirits would return to Earth. During obon week in Japan many families clean the graves of their ancestors. My wife’s grandmother showed me how to make a horse out of an eggplant and we put them in the family “haka”, or ancestors’ box.

I’ve been asking our students what they will do during the vacation, and most of them will stay in. With the current situation families can’t travel very far, so they will stay local and have fun at home. That’s the same for us too. I might try to get to higher ground again during the vacation to escape the heat. Enjoy your holiday everyone!

今週の木曜日の「山の日」からお盆休みが始まります。

この山の日の祝日が2016年に初めて制定されたことに驚きました。

お盆休みに合わせて制定された、とても新しい祝日です。

これは、この時期に公式の祝日がなかったために、政府が国民の祝日を入れたのだと思います。

山の日は、全国の山に感謝する日です。 8月は山に登って涼むのに最適な時期だと思います。

先日、白糸の滝に行ってきましたが、富士市との気温差を実感しました。

ここは海抜が低いため、非常に高温多湿になる可能性があります。

一方、長野県などの高地の県では、夏の気候はずっと涼しくなります。

山の日が唯一の公式の祝日ですが、多くの人が伝統的にお盆を祝います。

先祖の霊が地球に帰ってくる時です。アイルランドのハロウィンを思い出します。

精霊が地に戻ってくるので、人々は幽霊の衣装を着ていました。

日本ではお盆の間、多くの家族が先祖の墓を掃除します。

妻の祖母は、ナスから馬を作る方法を教えてくれ、家族の「ハカ」または先祖の箱に入れました。

生徒たちに休暇中に何をするか聞いてきましたが、ほとんどの生徒はステイホームのようです。

現在の状況では、遠くへ旅行することができないため、地元に留まり、家で楽しむようです。

それは私たちも同じです。休暇中に暑さから逃れるために、高地へいくかもしれません。
