This week I’m talking about one of the longest-running British TV shows and also one of my favourites, Doctor Who. This year it is celebrating its 60^th anniversary, first broadcast in 1963 it tells the story of “The Doctor” an alien time traveller who has been portrayed by many different actors and actresses over the years.

今週は、イギリスで昔からずっと放送されている大人気番組”ドクターWho”についてご紹介致します

今年でなんと1963年に第一回目が放送されてから60周年になるんですよ

これまでドクターWho、”宇宙人のタイムトラベラー”という設定で様々な俳優たちに演じられてきました。

Part of the appeal of the show has been its ability to reinvent itself with each new Doctor, this is via “regeneration” which means when the Doctor dies in the show, as they are an alien, they are able to change into someone else, with a new face and personality. This is part of why the show has been able to run so long as it changes and adapts with the times.

ドクターWhoの人気の一つに、死んだら新しい姿で生まれ変われるという不思議な能力があります

（彼はエイリアンなので特殊な能力を持っているんです）

この能力のおかげで何代も新しいドクターWhoが引き継がれているというわけなんです

The Doctor travels in their TARDIS, a time machine that can go anywhere and anytime but looks like an old British police box (technically it can become anything to blend in with the place or time it lands in, but it broke in the first episode and has never been able to be fixed), that is “bigger on the inside”.

ドクターたちはTARDISと呼ばれる、イギリスのポリスボックスに見えるタイムマシーンを使って、どの時代のどこにでも行くことができます。

（本来はどんな姿にもタイムマシンを変化させることができるのですが、最初のエピソードで主人公が壊してしまってからその機能がなくなってしまったのです。）

The TARDIS

It has greatly impacted British culture, with its iconic villains and most Britons having “Their Doctor” depending on their age and the time they grew up. While the show is aimed as a family show, it often can have scary situations that force many young viewers to watch it from the safety of “behind the sofa”.

このドラマシリーズはイギリス文化に大きな影響を与えました。

特に象徴的な悪役や登場人物がいるおかげで、年代ごとにそれぞれのお気に入りキャラクターがいるみたいですね
