Bread and Butter Pudding

This week, I’m discussing a famous British dessert, though it’s quite different from what many in Japan and the US might think of as pudding. In the UK, the term “pudding” refers to any sweet dish served as the final course of a meal, rather than a specific type of dessert.

今週はイギリスの有名なデザートについて話しますが、日本やアメリカの多くの人がプリンと思っているものとはかなり異なります。イギリスでは、「プディング」という用語は、特定の種類のデザートではなく、食事の最後に提供される甘い料理を指します。

One classic example is “Bread and Butter Pudding,” a traditional and straightforward dish favoured in the colder months of the year. It is very easy to make and consists of buttered bread slices layered with raisins in a baking dish, then covered with a mixture of egg custard seasoned with nutmeg and vanilla and topped with brown sugar. But over the years the dish has had many other variants, with chocolate to jam and various fruits and spices added to it. The dish is then baked in the oven until it turns a golden brown color. It is then served in a bowl and eaten hot or cold, and can be topped with cream or ice cream.

While one of the earliest recorded recipes for this dish dates back to 1728, its roots can be traced to a dessert called “Whitepot,” which is also from which rice pudding comes from.
