London on Bonfire Night

 

In the UK there is another festival that we celebrate a few days after Halloween on the 5^th of November. Known as Bonfire Night, Guy Fawkes Day, or Fireworks Night. On this day in the evening all over the country people group together to light bonfires and set off fireworks. Where ever you are on that night you are likely to see fireworks in the sky and children make a life-size man called a “Guy” out of old clothes and stuffed with newspapers to put on top of the bonfires and burn.

But why do we do this? It goes back to November 5^th, 1605, when a name called Guy Fawkes was arrested for plotting to blow up the parliament of The House of Lords with explosives placed below it. Fawkes and his fellow plotters had planned to assassinate the King at the time, James I, and his parliament. But their plot was foiled and people celebrated by lit bonfires around London and months later it became an enforced annual public day of thanksgiving for the plot’s failure.

These days it of course is no longer enforced but people still love to get together in the cold of early November and enjoy the evening. Eating hot dogs and drinking soup around large bonfires while the night sky is lit up with fireworks.

イギリスでは、ハロウィンが終わった後の11月5日にまたお祭りがあります。

このお祭りは「ボンファイヤー・ナイト」や「ガイ・フォークスデイ」「花火の夜」などと呼ばれています。

 

夕方になると国中いたるところで、人々が集まって焚火をしたり花火を打ち上げます。

この日はどこにいようと花火が見れますし、子供たちは”ガイ”と呼ばれる

等身大の人間を古い服や新聞紙などを丸めたもので作って、焚火で燃やします。

 

でもなんで人々はこのようなことをするようになったのでしょうか？

 

それは1605年、11月5日に遡ります。

ガイフォークスという男が政府転覆をもくろみ、地下から爆弾で爆発させようとし、逮捕された事件がありました。

彼と仲間たちは当時の王様であるジェームズ1世を暗殺しようと計画しました。

 

ところが計画実行前に計画がばれてしまい、彼らが捕まったことを祝うために、ロンドン中で焚火をしはじめたものが

のちに恒例のお祭りになったのだと信じられています。

 

近頃では、これらの行いをすることは義務的なものではなくなりましたが、

人々は今でも11月の少し肌寒くなってきたこの日に集まって楽し時間を過ごすことを楽しんでおり、

ホットドックやスープを大きい焚火の周りで楽しみ、空にはたくさんの花火が打ちあがります。
