I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the gentle shift into autumn! One of my favorite drinks here in Japan is milk tea, which you can easily find in supermarkets and convenience stores. While milk tea is well-known as a traditional English drink, it’s not usually served cold in the UK the way it often is here in Japan.

お元気ですか。秋へのやさしい移り変わりを楽しんでいますか。

私が日本で好きな飲み物のひとつがミルクティーです。スーパーやコンビニで手軽に見つけられるのが嬉しいですね。ミルクティーはイギリスの伝統的な飲み物として知られていますが、イギリスでは日本のように冷たい状態で飲まれることはあまりありません。

One of my favorite brands is Kirin Milk Tea, which features an illustration of the Duchess of Bedford, the woman who first introduced afternoon tea to England. Back in the 1800s, dinner was typically served quite late, around 8 p.m., leaving a long stretch between lunch and the evening meal. To bridge the gap, the Duchess began requesting a tray with tea, bread and butter, and cake in the late afternoon.

私のお気に入りのブランドのひとつが「キリンミルクティー」です。この商品には、イギリスで初めてアフタヌーンティーを広めた人物、ベッドフォード公爵夫人のイラストが描かれています。

1800年代当時、夕食は通常夜8時頃とかなり遅い時間に提供されていたため、昼食から夕食までの間が長く空いてしまっていました。その空白を埋めるために、公爵夫人は午後遅い時間に、紅茶とパン・バター、ケーキを載せたトレイを用意するよう頼むようになったのです。

What started as a personal habit soon turned into a social tradition. She began inviting friends to join her, and afternoon tea quickly became a fashionable event among the upper class.

These days, though, afternoon tea has taken on a more casual form. In many homes, it’s just a biscuit or a slice of cake with a mug of tea, usually made with a teabag. Quite a departure from its elegant beginnings… some might even call it sacrilege!
